Can I replace this with a chrome one ?

PostAuthor: mr vroom » Sun Jul 28, 2019 8:47 am

It’s that big washer/nut below the center of the handlebars? I Need to paint and clean up this area before I install a motogadet mini. Thanks

Doubt you can find a used chrome nut for that, but you could have that one chromed. :VTF:

That poor JIS fastener has endured a lot of Phillips abuse, and looks ready to strip out and ruin your day.

That’s another JIS nut ? I thought I had gotten rid of them all. I suppose I could just polish it - if I can get it off. Thanks

Just incase..you do know that is a one-piece "flange bolt"...-->not<-- a "nut/washer"? Don't try loosening it until you loosen the pinch bolt. :):
Have "no" idea if this is in as good shape as picture makes it look---> https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Yamaha-XV750-XV ... SwGEJctJNK
Grainger, FastenerMart, BoltDepot might even have something. Don't know bout your area..round here..Ace is really expanding the fastener department.

That JIS is just to hold (originally) the upper plastic tree cover. Doesn't lock anything. Doesn't even need to be there. I would imagine..little heat and good whack with an impact, if it's truly stuck. Bet ya could just latch on to it with some vicegrips and couple thumps would undo it. :bg:

Depending how fancy ya wanna get..maybe these guys can help:--> https://www.customtripletrees.com/TREES ... amaha.html
Most involved / pricey case, would be to swap out that steering stem for one of the later models that have external threads. Then the chrome cap could be used. I've never looked into what parts are actually compatible. Seen those caps are still available at various places.

Thanks! Safe to assume I know nothing...LOL

So.... first I strip the JIS bolt... I’m good at stripping things. At least I now know what I’m up against.

Those custom triple trees are works of art, but outa my price range for now. If I keep tinkering with this beast ( or *****? ) I’d rather spend the money on a newer front fork. But that’s a winter project.

I’m probably best off trying to polish up the old flange bolt, but I really appreciate all the tips and information. Thanks again!

Oh...no doubt those stems are deluxe..put the sight up as possible place/stepp'n stone to get whatcha need. Was also thinking, depending "how" you stripped that screw..person could just cut off the head, melt little lead into any voids. With some file'n/emery cloth work, should come out smooth. Then it's just a matter of what's next. Polishing or painting.

A little polishing worked just fine. Thanks
