86 yamaha xv700 carb? Problem one cylinder? Backfire

PostAuthor: Bamzride85 » Sat Nov 14, 2020 7:25 pm

Hi I have 86 yamaha virago xv700, put new carb rebuild kit on, new manifold gaskets and o rings. Found a few wires going into the headlight housing that needed to be spliced due to rubbing. I heat shrinked and wire loomed. On reserve it runs one cylinder and with fuel on both cylinders. Was told viragos will only run one cylinder when on reserve? My problem is lower pipe from front cylinder is shooting flame which is too rich i assume. could this just be an air idle adjustment or something else. Any help greatly appreciated.

Nope..should run on both cylinders until bike starts running outta fuel. Then it'll start studdering.

??? Not sure what that means. Unless ya mean there's "no" spark and/or firing at the #1 cylinder? Or the #2 cylinder is back firing?

If you're talk'n A/F mix screw (aka: pilot screw)...that adjustment controls "only" fuel...not air. And yes, it could effect how each carb runs. Mostly at idle. Could be other factors, besides, just the carbs upsetting the performance. Pilot screw's components..(mainly the 0-ring), carbs internals, sync, valves, compression, spark plugs, air intake, fuel flow etc etc etc.

I would suggest latch'n onto a manual. Either d/l form here VTF (after 5 posts) or buy, borrow, steal a hard copy.
