Lost Key Looking For Key Code

PostAuthor: kingbau » Mon Feb 10, 2020 11:31 am

I have a 1987 Yamaha Virago and misplaced my key.

I looked online and found out that if I can find the key code my locksmith can make a new one for $25

I brought in the helmet lock because I read online that they might be able to pull the key code from that and they said that the helmet lock had 5 of 7 prongs and that the ignition would have a differing amount / more.

They also said the gas cap would be similar to the helmet lock and my best bet is to find the key code on the ignition and I'm wondering how or where to look!

Thanks for the help always guys.

If the switch and helmet lock were original, the code on the back of the helmet lock is correct. Yamaha used one key for switch, gas cap, helmet lock and tool box.

I appreciate this immensely! I'll go back in and tell them.

IIRC I found a key code on the bottom (ventral, under, frame side) of my ignition switch >>> #20 >> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... ectrical-1

but think I ended-up taking the tank in so he could use the cap to make the new key.
