85 xv700 starter

PostAuthor: capaw72 » Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:18 pm

Hi!

The 85 xv700 starter can be replaced with a 86 or 87 year old free launcher?
If so, what needs to be changed?

Thank you in advance for your help

Howdy. Welcome to VTF.

86 or 87 year olds are allowed senior-discounts some places, but don't know if they get a free launch(-er). :naughty: JK

the problem is that 1985 was a transition year for Virago ['84/'85] from Generation-I [mono-shock] to Gen-II [dual rear shocks] and Yamaha was addressing the starter issues Gen-I have, so
in order for a Gen-II '86-on to replace your Gen-I '85 starter, you will need to have the Gen-II system not originally on your '85.
Gen-II added a sprag type clutch bendix and solenoid. [vs "internal clutch" and relay]

does your engine left-side look like this? [see pic of Gen-II missing 'dog-bone' cover] if so, the answer is, yes it will.

1986 Gen-II ---> http://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam/ ... ter-clutch

Hi,

I have Gen 1. Then, unfortunately, the old solution remains.
Thanks

I have an ‘85 700 and I learned quickly that Viragos of that year are known to have starter issues. It’s an inherent design flaw. I was having the typical issue of the starter gear not engaging and when I removed the left side housing to access the starter I noticed that the main gear had worn down to the point that the outer edge of the teeth wore at an angle, thus preventing the gear from engaging. The simple solution is to flip the gear around so that the unworn side of the teeth are used to turn the bike over. It’s not a permanent solution, but the starter will engage more consistently and turn the bike over with less grinding.

Flipping the idler gear is not a good solution the back side of the idler gear is cut strait....that is to say that there is no bevel on the teeth as there is on the front side...here is a better fix..
I recently did this. If you remove the left side cover and manually engage the starter clutch you will see that the idel gear only meshes a tiny bit with the flywheel if u cut the compression spring by one "loop" and engage it manually again it will meshes completely put it all back together start her up and not a sound... Good Luck
