XV400 rear wheel swap but will it fit?

PostAuthor: landton » Wed May 16, 2018 4:42 am

Hello

Writing from Sweden and this is my first post. Thinking of buying a XV400 1983 to build a classig cafe racer/scrambler. I really want spoke Wheels and if I remember correct but can,t find it here that virago 535 rear Wheel should fit, can anyone confirm this? Perhaps a XVS rear Wheel fits also? Also thinking of do a fork swap to a XVS650 fork.

Many thanks!

Here is my latest Project that I sold. It was built on a Honda NT650GT Bros!

BROS, or Hawk as it was known in USA, was a very nice bike well ahead of its time.

Regarding rear wheel swap for your 400, this viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48783 suggest it isn't a direct swap. I have read somewhere, though, that the 535 and XVS650 wheels will fit. I guess there is only one certain way to find out; bring your rear wheel - or just the coupling - to a breaker and measure if they use the same diameter and number of splines or not. If they differ, you will need to have some machining performed, or see if the 535 internals will fit your 400 final drive bell.

Another alternative will be to fit the complete rear end off an XV750/920/1000. You will need the swingarm, final drive and drive shaft. You will then need a rear wheel off a wire wheel Gen II machine to fit the "new" splines.

According to the Pipeburn article, the 535 can be made to fit,
The rear wasn’t much easier, with the shaft drive limiting choices to make both ends match up. They swapped out final drives and hubs and got a spoked rear from a XV535 to fit.
however, no details on what modifications are needed.

The XVS650 tire is much wider (170) that that of the 1st Gen 400/500 (130) or the 535 (140), so probably not the XVS650.

I was primarily thinking about the hub, Jake - if that fits, you can always change the rim.
