Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing videoInformative video, thanks
I noticed at the end there is a shot of the underside of the crankcase. My questions is what is the stuff that looks like plumbers putty running down the crankcase split.?? Is it there to stop leaks, and if so does it work?? Carl
Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing video
The grey stuff is standard automotive store loctite epoxy. There was oil leaking from there. I'm not quite sure why but I have some theories: 1. it appears that the the motor might have been removed at one time and split. I replaced the clutch a few weeks ago and I noticed that two giant ~ 32mm bolts had the tab bend down by some backyard hacker. 2. Virago's have very soft coil springs. A few weeks ago I rebuilt the front forks. There were marks on the belly of the motor from bottoming out from the previous owner (PO). After applying the loctite epoxy it reduced the center leak a lot. A year or so later I saw fresh marks and my friend said he bottomed out going off a side walk over a curb. That scraped off some epoxy and the leak started again. It is important to really clean the bottom well then use brake cleaner, then sand and dry and apply epoxy. It's worth doing. Paul
![]() Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing videoMatt,
sure appreciate your efforts, been riding Viragos for about five years, you videos answer a lot of questions and point out the things I have been missing, Currently putting a 98 engine in a '90 1100, most helpful. thanks Dave, Galion, Ohio
Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing video
I'm glad the video was / is helpful. I learned a lot while doing it. I also did a big rennovation on my bmw and on the virago this fall. I rebuilt the virago forks - polished the pits in the tubes and treated both the main and reserve gas tanks with Kreem. Some time either I or Joe Monzo will try to get a summary of the work on to the virago forum. The Kreem really works if you do the prep and use muriatic acid to etch the metal and disolve rust. Joe's virago - the one in the video has around 45K miles on it now! Matt, thanks for getting the link out to owners that are trying to keep their bikes going strong or just going, lol. Take care virago owners! PaulC aka mrbios
![]() Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing videoI have it Matt.
I have in original Quicktime format at 223MB ( 219MB zipped ) or avi at 104MB ( 102MB zipped ) Something went wrong with the conversion to avi and I can't use Windows Media Player for viewing, but VLC works fine. _______________________________________________________________________

Video - Download a free copy from my website.
1. Go to to my website: Click HERE 2. Depending on your browser - right click on "Yamaha_Virago_1100_Starter_Project_MPEG1.mpg" [630MB] and choose "Save As" to save your own copy. The file is quite large and wil require a cable or DSL high speed modem. If you really wanted a DVD I could burn one and mail it to you for $5 to cover postage & effort. The format of the movie on my website is MPEG1 (a lower quality version of DVD which uses MPEG2 format). I chose MPEG1 for reduced size and it plays on most PC's and MAC's unlike MPEG2 which requires a separate codec to be installed. Do the same thing for still photos and links: "Yamaha_Virago_1100_1993_PHOTOS.zip" [328MB] If you have trouble send me an email - my address is in my profile on this site. Three years after making this video my friend's virago is still running great - no problems with the Kreamed gas tank or starter clutch, starts perfect ever time. I will make a video update at some point. Paul Cofrancesco aka MrBios Photos are currently uploading and will finish in about 1 hour.
![]() Well I started uploading the video file over 3 hours ago and it's time to give up. Maybe I'll try another time.have it reformatted the wmv 105 MB.

My website is hosted on ipower which got bought out and after that they started to throttle bandwidth. When I tested the link it provided about 500KB/sec or 1/2 Megabyte per second. The problem I realized is I should have zipped the file so it would offer to download rather than play the move. If you just click on the movie it starts playing in the browser after about 1 minute. Because the file is so large it can jam in the browser. It is best to download your own copy that way you can play it on a laptop in your garage and not need internet access. If anyone wants a copy on DVD email me an address and $5 and I will mail a disc and you can make and distribute as many copies as you like to fellow virago owners. Enjoy!

![]() Will it the fix work on an 85 xv700 - I'm not sure
Rick, I'm almost sure this will work on your bike but I recommend calling your local yamaha dealer - and asking them to get in touch with yamaha tech. You should also download and look at the photos which provide a lot of detail. At $400 the parts aren't cheap but if yamaha tech says they will work on your bike then this will solve your problem once and for all and you will never revisit this problem. My friends xv1100 now has around 65,000 miles and since doing the repair three years ago has never experienced even one mistart! Good luck and if they work on your bike please post that and I will update the video. PaulC aka mrbios
![]() Re: Will it the fix work on an 85 xv700 - I'm not surePaul, I hate to tell you this, But I downloaded your pictures last night. A rather large zip file at 321 MB. The file was corrupted and therefore useless. As I typed this post, the second download has finished and it is also corrupted. After looking at the downloaded file size, I realized that this is what happened. I switched to Opera and when I got a download error message, I resumed the download and all was good. I would warn all that a lot in the file is not about the starter fix. Last edited by Jake on Thu May 27, 2010 10:02 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: [ KB ] Starter clutch and idler gear fixing videoThanks much for the videos/images, very helpful.
Unfortunately, the hosting service for the files sucks. Not your fault. Transfer rate is indeed ~500 Kbps. Transfer disconnects halfway through. A decent download manager will handle this fault and resume. Again, thank you much. '89 XV1100. EGR plugged at heads. No intake pod/filter. Jardine exhaust.
