yamaha part numbers explained

this may help in crossrefrence or just what a part is supposed to be. :eek:
the model number is the begining model and does not note later model numbers.

here is some additional info re: part numbers.
I have been thinking about the cost of replacing a worn cam on my 1981 750. In Canada the Yamaha dealers want $214.00 for part # 4x7 12171-00-00 or 12181-00-00. Front or rear cam.
On the web site of various suppliers like Bike Bandit, X treme, Motogrid... the price varies from$124.00 to $135.00 approx. for this part number. However if you look at the models after 1983... the part numbers changed only by the prefix ( first 3 digits ) ie: 4X7 changed to 42X.
The rest of the numbers remained the same. BUT the price came down. WAY DOWN !!!
Now you are thinking.. Yeah but how do you know if the newer part will fit an older model?? That is what I wanted to find out so I posted the question.
Thanks to Drufus for putting me onto Megacycle Cams. When you go to thier website you can look in the catalogue to see how much it would cost to hard surface your cam.You will notice that XV 700, 750, 920, 1000, and 1100 are all grouped together. It got me to thinking ...if a cam shop does this for living, are they wrong in grouping all the models and sizes together? or am I misinterpreting the info. So I phoned Megacycle Cams in California and asked. I did not get the womens name there but she is the most knowledgable person I have met when it comes to Cams. She confirmed that YES the same cam fits ALL of the models listed,up to 1992 and she would know because they have been ordering the same part number for years and she said they are all the same. They buy them in pairs, for core exchanges.
So there you have it. I will be ordering 2 cams for my 1981 750 from MR Cycles in North Carolina at the stupendous price of $68.43each plus valve components.And if I am wrong... come next spring there will be a XV 750 selling for parts.

from 81+ most of the Virago engine is the same. Only the starter workings went through changes.

Though early cams were soft / not hardened like newer.

an expensive mistake i made was thinking i could put my 920 pistons and jugs on a 750. BUT the wrist pins sizes are majorly diffrent, otherwise everything else seems identical.

Oh yea but that's to be expected.

How they come up with different sizes is to mess with bore and stroke ratios.

Would need to get 750 jugs bored but not 100% sure on that. long as the wrist pin location on the pistons are the same.

Which the probably would of done instead of a rod changes if it was easier / cheaper.
Might need the 920 heads though.


Plus it might make a better bike, big bore, long stroke. A Buick in the makings;)

This seems to clear things up a bit, but want to make sure that when I go to buy a part that I'm not getting something that won't work. Example;
part numbers;42X-25111-01-98 is the front hub off a 1984 XV700 and; 341-25111-01-98 is the hub off a 1988 XV535. The only difference is the first 3 digits, which should be the model code, correct? And since all the other numbers are the same, then the hubs should be interchangable?
Here's where I get pains in my head. For the spokes on these 2 years,(the 84 700 & 88 535), the 700 numbers are. 42X-25104-00-00 , and the 535 are, 2GV-25104-00-00 . Again the only difference is the first 3 digits, but on the 700 they remain the same, 42X , but the 535 change from 341 on the hub to 2GV on the spokes. ANyone help on this?

hubs will be different.
535 spokes came from another model built before the 535. could be anything.

the basic code ( 25111) is just telling you that the part is from the front end and it is a hub.

the ( 01 ) is the first design, no changes made.

the ( 98 ) is the finish, chrome

In the case of XV920 rings, the part number is 5H1-11610-00-00.

5H1 designates the first Yamaha model using this part.

11610 designates piston rings

The first "00" means the original part for this model. If the part was subsequently revised, these 2 digits would be "10"; next revision "20", etc. In the case of piston rings, "00" means standard size, "10" means 1st oversize, "20" means second oversize.

The second "00" refers to a color code. In the case of piston rings, color doesn't matter. In the case of fenders or sidecovers, the part numbers for different years of the same model may differ only by the color code - the last 2 digits.

With a little research, you too can determine that the same connecting rod (5A8-11650-00-00), wrist pin (5A8-11633-00-00), intake valve (2J2-12111-01-00), and exhaust valve (5A8-12121-00-0) are used in XV920s through XV1100s, but not XVS1100s. The same crank bearings (5G5-11656-00-00) are used in the XV700s through the XVS1100s. The same piston rings are used in XV1100s and XVS1100s (1TA-11610-00-00), but different rings in the XV1000 (5A8-11610-00-00).

And now, a real secret: the system for hardware.

The first set of digits identifies what kind of hardware:
98501 = panhead screw
91311 = allen head screw
92990 = lockwasher
etc.

The next set of digits give the dimensions - 05010 is 5mm diameter, 10mm in length.

For example, want to replace the crankcase cover screws with stainless steel screws? You need 3 6x20mm (91311-06020), 9 6x25 (91311-06025), 8 6x30 (91311-06030) and 4 6x40mm (91311-06040). And don't forget to use antiseize.

With these codes, you can replace fasteners not covered in the usual kits of chrome/stainless fasteners.

Don't forget that some fasteners are high tensile strength, so you shouldn't substitute a weaker fastener that's the same dimensionally.

So, correct me if I'm wrong. The first 3 numbers/letters (model code) make no diffrence, when looking for interchangable parts. As long as the following numbers match?

not necessarily. part may have same basic code, but have differences between models. some '81-'83 model parts don't interchange with '84-on or other models. (XJ,XS,etc)

If all the "numbers" match, it will work. for instance (1100)-1TE use some (700)-4X7 parts.

I'm looking to find out what rotors(flywheel) will work on my 85 xv1000. I have used the parts fiche and determined that 84-85 xv1000 are pt.#42h-81450-20-00. These are the only two that are exact match. When looking at all models from 84 xv700 thru 90 xv1100 all numbers accept the first three are the same.( Example 85 xv700 is 20x-81450-20-00 and 87 xv700 is 1rm-81450-20-00) I've been told most of these will work on my bike. How do I know witch ones for sure?

I would be real surprised if any '85 - on didn't fit, but that is just my guess.
