Dual carb to single carb cheap.Mag wheel to wire spoke cheap

PostAuthor: Davexvfan » Thu Nov 10, 2011 2:27 pm

Hello. I recently performed a couple of conversions on my 1984 XV1000 'custom' Virago pretty inexpensively. So I thought I could share the steps with other Virago riders and fans. I converted the problematic Hitachi dual carb setup to a single carb Mikuni. I also converted the ugly outdated gold mag wheels to wire spoke wheels that were off of a XV Virago 535. If anyone is interested in the changes I performed for pretty low dollar. Reply to my post and I can be more explanatory then this intro. I am new to this forum. But am excited to be a part of it. Happy riding.

Ok that's an easy one that I should be able to handle... Click on the User Control Panel up on the top left of this window. This will take you to your control panel.... not so strange.
Now you have a group of tabs and the second one from the right should be named "Gallery". Click on that and the to the left again you will see four more tabs. You need to click on the one that is named "Manage personal albums" and then from there you can start to create your album by Uploading an image.
Those are the basic steps that should get you started...

PLease share the step by step... and photos if you have them on doing the convert. I am sure I can't afford it, but I would love to get spoke rims on mine.

Lots of people want spokes, so all the info you can give regarding the change will be well received.

You also have a PM ( Private Message )

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I will be out of town for the next few days so I will post some pics of the mods when I return.
Below is a quick explanation of the mods I did

Converting the dual Hitachis to a single mikuni:
Purchased 2 ' U ' bend pieces of mandrel pre bent ' U ' shaped steel tubing from Columbia River Mandrel Bending in Portland, Oregon
Cost $ 12 each plus $10 shipping.Removed old carbs and cylinder mount boots( save these ). Then I cut the boots off of these mounts so it was just a flat flange to mount back to the heads. Then I used cardboard to cut an s shaped template that fit perfectly between the head intake surfaces. Then (Don't forget to subtract the 1/4" thickness of the flanges on both ends now) I then carefully cut and grinded two pieces of the tubing to fit the cardboard template for a perfect alignment. Welded the pieces together. Bolted the flanges on the heads then tack welded the flanges on to the fitted tubing. Measure the exact center of s tube now and drill a hole with a hole saw to mount the carb mount tube. After cutting, grinding, and forming the carb mount tube to be straight and level tack weld it to the s tube. Finished up all the welds, grinded them for appearance, then painted it.
Cost me about $45 total to build the manifold. They sell online for up to $300
I purchased a used flatside 40mm mikuni carb on ebay for $ 110 New they can be found online for $ 220 Or the older style round mikuni's can be found for much cheaper. The difference in power and reliability is a huge improvement on my Virago. Will be happy to answer any questions or steps taken if needed. Happy riding.

Will go into the spoke wheels conversion in a few days.

Single carb conversion is found here quite a bit, it's the spoked wheels that will generate the most interest.

No one here has done the conversion to 535 spokes, you've broken new ground and we all want to know how.

@ Davexvfan
I have moved 94Vgo535Chick's photos from your album. That should clear up the issue of you thinking there was an album already in your name.

@ Everyone else, until he makes a reappearance, I have found this info in his album, while moving pics from his album.
Offtopic :
This is my 1984 Yamaha XV 1000 Virago. I have customized it to reflect my personal preferences I want in my bike that I ride. It has about 11,400 miles on it. I have converted the dual problematic Hitachi carbs to a single 40mm flatside Mikuni. I had to custom fabricate a carb manifold to use the Mikuni. It is so much more powerful now and has not had one single problem since the conversion. I have also converted the stock mag wheels to wire wheels that came off of a Virago XV 535. I had to fabricate a custom front axle and shorten the rear driveshaft to make the conversion work. I have rode 2700 miles since the wheels conversion also without one single problem. I also have added chrome aftermarket accessories including a set of custom cut shotgun drag pipes, custom lower wider handlebars, aftermarket custom turn signals and tailight, custom single air cleaner, aftermarket saddlebags, custom painted by myself. And a short windshield. It starts up instantly and runs very strong continuously every time I need it to.

That should give you guys food for thought in the mean time :tease:

Wow, I used to own a 1994 Intruder 800 and they come equipped with spoke wheels exept for some 1985-86 models. They have mag wheels that they call "Snowflake" wheels.
Over at the Intruder forum everyone wants to convert to the Snowflakes because they are tubeless and look great and will pay pretty good money for a decent pair.
I quess it's just a matter of wanting to change things out a bit on the motorcycle, right? :fonzy:
