XV1100 Air Induction System removalHi all, I decided to remove the Air induction system ( AIS ) from my virago as it was back firing a bit and I believe it to be a pointless waste of time anyway. I thought I would document how I went about it on here and hopefully it will help someone else.
The first thing to do is remove the chrome cover off the AIS ( this is the false air filter on the left side of the bike) this is done by removing the 10mm bolt form the underside and carefully pulling up on the chrome cover to release 2 rubber bungs not unlike the ones that hold the side panels on. Once removed you will be presented with a picture not unlike mine, that's if I'm doing this right lol. You can see the components of the AIS mounted to the back plate. Remove the back plate by removing the allen bolt top left and release the 2 clamps on the large pipes that go to the exhausts and pull them off. There is only one vacuum pipe coming into the system from behind the back plate as can be seen in this slightly blurred photo. Now release the vacuum pipe that goes into the AIS housing, do this at the 4 way vacuum junction, this will free the AIS to be removed from the bike leaving only the open vacuum line. Next we need to remove the pipes that go to both exhaust manifold areas, to do this undo the jubilee clips that hold the pipes on and also the allen bolts that hold the pipe to the engine case and gently pull them off the chrome pipe and remember to refit the allen bolts back into the engine case. I tried a couple of methods to seal the end of the pipe, one of which you can see here. But eventually settled by packing the end of the pipe with aluminum foil and and a heat resistant plug. I only chose this method as these were items I had lying around. Next because I wanted to refit the left false air filter to balance the look of the bike I removed the component parts of the AIS from the backing plate, refitted the screws and clamps, less 1 screw that I used to block off the vacuum pipe that originally connected to the AIS as I was now going to reattach this pipe to the vacuum 4 way junction near the carb so I would have no vacuum leaks. Last thing to do was to remount the back plate and refit the chrome cover, start the bike and test for vacuum or exhaust leaks. Hope all this helps someone visualize the job in hand. Re: XV1100 Air Induction System removalDo the carbs need adjusting after this or is it as simple as removing the parts and enjoying?

![]() Re: XV1100 Air Induction System removalI'm currently doing this as well. People say the copper cap fits perfectly. Is there something that's a better colour? I'm going to ask the powder coater if these can be painted, too. For the clamp, is there anything nicer looking than that screw, plumbing type one that came on the bike? Would it be possible to solder or expoxy this thing on? Does air pull in here or push out?
Thanks for the pictures. 1992 XV750
Re: XV1100 Air Induction System removalI was just thinking of this the other day. Great pics and thanks for the write up!

Re: XV1100 Air Induction System removalI would like to know the pros and cons of this modification. I try to keep my bike mostly stock but have no problem with modifying to improve performance. Will this change help her breathe better? Does it create deceleration changes? My bike is a California version and I worry about fuel flow rate, all my riding is done at 5500 to 10000 ft elevation.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Re: XV1100 Air Induction System removal
Here's how I capped off that fixture. Just dremeled off close to the jug, plugged with some copper RTV and capped of with this rubber cap & clamp. So much cleaner than a screw/bolt jammed in there. Been like that since the eighties when I junked all that stuff off the bike, so it must work. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
