Oil filter cover O rings

PostAuthor: DGA » Sun Mar 05, 2017 9:40 pm

I got my bike going again today, so glad. I changed the oil filter with a Fram, which has the O rings included. The larger one that goes towards the outside of the filter cover was too large, I seem to remember that last time I used the Fram. So I used the old one I had which I thought looked ok. Well I have oil leak problems now, and fought it a lot of the afternoon, quite annoying to oil up my freshly reinstalled clean engine, not to mention oil on the back tire... So, without buying O rings from partzilla, does anyone know the O ring sizes for first Gen 750, and I believe all of the 700 through 1100 engines? I would like to order packs of them from McMaster to keep on hand, for days like today...

I just received 3 new FRAM oil filters with the O-rings included and sure enough the larger/skinnier one is WAY too big....same in all 3 filter packs...
I measured the size of a few old ones and the diameters of their related slots on the oil filter cover. Here's what I came up with.

Fram o-ring sizes -----> http://www.fram.com/Search-Parts/Part-Detail?PN=CH6004

MadMax2020 wrote:I used - 7mm I.D. x 2.5mm Cross Section/Thick - 53mm I.D. x 2.5mm Cross Section/Thick & 58mm I.D. x 2mm Cross Section/Thick. They worked out great for me and I haven't had any problems yet. The 7mm x 2.5mm is slightly thicker than the flat one you described, so when you tighten up that bolt, the o-ring will squish out and make a perfectly fine sealing surface. Did for me anyways :bg:

Good Luck

:thanks: Good write up and archive info.
For some reason, the Fram filters at the Pep Boys and O'Reillys near me don't include the o-rings. The Wix 24935 does come with the correct o-rings.

I agree. I'll take care of it sometime this evening.EDIT: tomorrow.

1stone0f8 measurements and the o-rings MadMax2020 uses are very close.

Ok so to order these on McMaster.com the 7mm one is 9262K727, the 53mm one is 9262K933, the 58mm one is 1302N052. About $22 for all, you get the small one is a pack of 100 and the larger two are packs of 25. McMaster have a great website and their phone app is as good too.

OK. digging a little deeper with a bit more research on these o-rings, I have partially decoded the part number, if anyone can decipher the thickness of the o-ring, please add your thoughts.

Decode o-rings.jpg

Based on the screenshot above, we can conclude that the part numbers for the o-rings coincide very closely with the measurements taken by 1stone0f8 and the o-rings used by MadMax2020.

For instance, the small o-ring is measured at 7.1mm and the part number is 93210-07438-00.

07438 refers to the inside diameter of the 0-ring, the 07 corresponds to the measured 7.1mm, what the 438 represents is what I can't grasp.

The same thing holds true for the others, the red/orange o-ring measured at 54.9mm the part number is 93210-54452-00, 54 the inside diameter

Black outer o-ring measures at 58.9mm, the part number is 93210-58346-00, 58 is the inside diameter.

o-ring diagram b.jpg

With the measurements provided by 1stone0f8 and my own decoding ( I could be wrong ), I feel confident the o-rings used by MadMax2020 are very close to being correct.

MadMax2020:

7mm I.D. x 2.5mm Cross Section/Thick for small o-ring

53mm I.D. x 2.5mm Cross Section/Thick for red/orange o-ring

58mm I.D. x 2mm Cross Section/Thick for large black o-ring

Worth noting: MadMax2020 owns a 1981

A little bit of a curiosity in the parts numbers.

Just using the '81 XV750H the #2 o-ring ( large black one ) is 93210-58459-00 only used on the '81 and '82 750, 920 920RH & RJ.

For comparison the '96 XV750H1, the #2 o-ring ( large black one ) is 93210-56459-00, which is used from '83 onward.

There was a change in the oil filter cover for '83.

Could that mean a 56mm #2 from '83 up ? Would either a 58mm or 56mm work ? A 56mm would easily stretch that extra 2mm.

I'm inclined to believe a 56mm would better suit for '83 and up.

that would be consistent with there # system for bolts. ---> Screw, Pan Head 98580-06010-00 = 98580-M6 x 10mm
