2-1 MAC Exhaust sound ?

PostAuthor: Gary_Topper » Mon Sep 25, 2017 3:08 pm

Hello,

I woud like to change my stock exhaust system on my 82'' xv 750, and the 2-1 MAC exaust with a 12" Muffler could be an good alternative.

Does any body have it on his bike, and could post a video of the sound ?

I just want to avoid being controled by the french police every 10 kilometers :;:

Thanks in advance

cheers

Any aftermarket exhaust is going to be louder than stock. Unless the stock mufflers have been gutted.

The MAC muffler isn't too loud, but it doesn't perform well and is harder to jet to than others. The Cone Engineering stainless steel muffler with a baffle is a much better option. It performs very well, has a better sound and tone, isn't loud and jets easily. That said I'm not sure what your law states on noise emissions.

Thanks for you answers.

Basically, I'm interested in buying this head pipes : Mac head pipes

Is seems to have two compatible mufflers with baffle :

muffler-18-slip-on

12-ss-reverse-cone-slip-on

By the way my stock exhaust is a bit rusty, and loud...

On the C Bass cafe racer, it seems to be a 12" cone muffler, I think this gonna be great !

@Hellgate I think I'm going to follow your advice and take a cone engineering with the head pipes !

It's a nice set up. You'll need to fab up a hanger bracket for the muffler. That's pretty simple however.

Note that the headers are mild steel and will rust. In most of the US it's not an issue, in Europe it could be a problem with the cooler weather and greater amounts of rain.

I certainly would not discourage anyone from doing an exhaust swap on their bike. But, one has to be aware that with these particular V-twins, going to a 2-1 system, is going to change the HP to Torque Curve quite abit. (Well, somewhat-upper end) And....the sound, with such a reverse bell shape muffler, which is essentially straight thru (with slash style resonator ) may sound pretty tinny. Maybe ok on cafe/bobber style, where that type of sound and power curve is wanted. But on a cruiser style? I, personally wouldn't think so. But haven't check around either. Just something to think about.

Sounds:
Have the MAC 2-1 on my Maggot, a '78 CX 500. It has really cool road sounds at only two narrow RPM ranges and they are at the begining of the torque flat and somewhere near the end of the torque flat, neither! in the normal speed ranges that I ride. The decel can be cool in spots, but generally its a RATTY SOUNDING bike.

Too brutal for riders directly behind me.
Too burtal for me for touring but kind of an in-yo-face-Muggle fun ride every so often back in the day.

I'd honestly say it SOUNDS as UGLY as it looks, but I love the bike and hate to part with it. Its a comfy ride on the bottom and a little shoulder stress on the expressway without windscreen.

Glad I had the patience to wait 8-9 weeks for the $280 puzzel pieces. (above MAC not shown)
It Sounds Faster but its Not.

Rancher... Nice description..Ratty? Kinda what I meant by tinny. Maybe a hollow/tinny rat caught in a trap? lol Was also going to say: Close eyes..picture a Kawasaki Triple, with a SuperTrap and no discs..push'n 7grand. Oh crap, gives me the puckers just think'n of it. Only thing I can think of that even comes close to sounding fairly decent..would be (I dare say) a harley. But that only cuz of the 45° crank, single carb, and some odd-ball timing does it sound ok. Even then..choke/gag :blah: :blah:

Tinny is the perfect description. The baffle isn't attached very well to the muffler shell, hence a tinny, rattley sound.

Tinny is a most excellent description. Embarassingly Tinny perhaps.

And yeah, there is a Hogly sound range in there somewhere in decel.
If I'm mad at the world, well I can be annoying with it.

Maybe it will sound better on a big Virago.

Hi folks,

thanks for your answers.

About the changes in hp and torque, with this kind of exhaust swap, do I need to modify the carb (New jets or anything) or a new air/gas settings will be enough ?

I saw on a cafe racer project called C-Bass (I'm sure you know it :;: ) the guy made the swap I would like to make, the sound is pretty good (deep and loud), you can hear it on this video C-bass sound.

I will probably take the chromed head pipes, and I asked the website to give me the hardware and gaskets needed for free if I buy muffler and Head pipes :): .

He's using the straight through muffler, no baffle inside. If you're concerned about police that is not the muffler for you.
