engine painting ideas

PostAuthor: eslmatt » Sun Aug 13, 2017 8:19 am

my xv750 has sat outside for every day of 33 year life, summer and winter. Absolutely no one has loved or cared for her...

I am thinking about ideas for cleaning up the engine. Reading through this section it sounds like a nice looking polished engine is a lifestyle as much as look. I don't have time for that.

So paint... bike was painted black, by the previous owner. Other than blacking the thing out, what ideas do you guys have?

I went black with polished fins/cases.. this is some how the only photo I've taken this year since I finished building it.

could use a paint to match OEM engine 'silver'.
there is paint that matches 'aluminum' color perfectly. looks like brand-new.

used it on my resto of '67 CL-77 Honda. here's an "after"pic, I'll see if I can find the "before" pic.
I didn't paint cylinders, only the lower end on that one.

Did you just paint and then block sand the edge of the fins? Looks good.

Still thinking and planning. Most painted engines are black or gray...

Here is what I have come up with.

Black case and cylinders, with silver heads and red accents.
My plan is to paint things like the chain tensioner covers, starter ends, and valve covers red. See how it looks and decide from there what gets painted what color. I think I will also do the sanded fins... that does look cool.

here is the case with red oil sensor cover.
