XV500 Cheap Air Filter

PostAuthor: Andrew500 » Fri Aug 10, 2018 12:27 am

For those of you who don't like to double the value of your XV500 every time you install a new air filter, here is what I've done in the past:

I think the pictures say it all, so I'm not adding much for explanations. Please note that my old filter was likely aftermarket, and I am not sure if the genuine one comes apart the same way.

This time I used a FRAM CA4828 filter, because it was cheap, the right thickness and was big enough to make two bike filters. Works out to about $7 or $8 per rebuild (and that's Canadian dollars :r: ) . I'm sure it could be done even cheaper.

Nicely done! I'll def bookmark this for my next filter change.
When I got the bike it hadn't been changed in years and the bike ran noticeably better after slapping and OEM filter on, but I don't want to spend north of 70$ every time it's due [emoji14]

Thanks Guys!

Yes, this bike runs way better with a fresh filter (or maybe I just never changed mine often enough :bg: ). I just wish I had kept another old filter. That way I could always have a spare ready to go.

Outstanding! I am glad I saved my old filter!

I have eliminated (and plugged) the large dia fitting that serves as a crankcase breather (from the rear head to the frame). I had a problem with short filter life due to oil getting blown onto the inside of the filter. Basically took an 8mm flange bolt (with a 12mm head), wrapped the bolt in some 0.25" ID tygon tubing and pressed this assembly into the frame from the inside. If that fitting is left open to atmosphere, the engine will be breathing unfiltered air AND (as a bonus) will not run very well.

The crankcase (rear head) vent tube was extended and re-routed to the bottom of the motor and now vents to atmosphere. Yamaha 4T MX bikes have a similar setup.

Next time I am in there I will photograph and post.
