XV500 throttle cable

PostAuthor: burr » Mon Sep 11, 2017 4:08 pm

Hey guys!

New XV500 owner here… I'm new to the bike, but not to 80's Yamahas. Also have a, '81 XS400 and you can find me over at the Xs400.com forum.

Anyway I just got this '85 XV500 but finding replacement parts seems to be VERY hard. Not only is data hard to find for the '85 model (NADA guides doesn't list the XV500 as an option in 1985…) but Boats.net doesn't even list the 1985 XV500 as an option!
Assuming the 1983 XV500 is the same bike, I'm looking for a throttle cable replacement. However I've called Yamaha, been to a few local shops and online, and can't find a single replacement option. OEM parts are apparently "obsolete."

So, what to do? Hit the forums looking for help! So, anyone know the specs for a XV500 throttle cable, or know where I can get one, or how to get them made?

THanks!

-burr

Should be the same as the '83.

Hi burr,

Search "22U-26311-00" on Ebay, there is at least one currently available in the USA. That is assuming your XV500 is the same as the 1983 XV500K. The reason I say that is because most people claim the XV500 was only made in 1983 (XV500K)

I've been curious obout manufacture dates of the 500s ever since I got mine, because mine was registered as a 1984, and the owners manual clearly says XV500L. The "L" being consistant with other 1984 yamaha models. But the manufacture date stamped on the VIN sticker is July, 1983. Mine was sold in Canada by the way.

What date is on your sticker im curious, and what part of the world is the bike from?

Interestingly, many european Yamaha websites list XV500 models for most if not all years from 1983 up to 1998. But looking at the parts diagrams, only 1983 and 1987 models are the same as the XV500K we know here in North America. The remainder looks to me like the XV535.

For some reason I wasn't getting notifications, so i just saw this now. Apologies for the late reply.

It turns out my bike was imported to Canada from the USA sometime in the late 90's… but I've been to more than 5 bike shops and almost NO ONE, including official Yamaha distributors, recognize that my XV500 is an '85. But the '83 parts *should* fit

I suppose it's a bit late in the day but i also had to replace the throttle cable on my xv500 (1983) American import. Frustrated by lack of suppliers here in the UK I took a risk and got one off Amazon advertised for a virago 750. cost 10 quid or thereabouts. The length of the inner cable was just right and the barrel ends perfect but i had to shorten the outer by about 3/4" . When I got the bike there was loads of parts missing so I have had to cobble together most of those parts that break or wear. The clutch cable was fabricated from a kit and as the bike has forks 6 inches longer than stock I'm now searching for a speedo cable to fit. Good luck with yours.

Many of us are not getting notifications, soo don't feel alone! Look at the white sticker on the tripple tree tube, It will tell you the year of manufacture. The XV500 was only imported into the US in 83, Here's the part number: https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamah ... 6f58d3780a
You should be able to find one on eBay or one of the cable companies. I have had cables made up at my local motorcycle shop.
