An NZ TR1 projectRe: An NZ TR1 projectJust revisited this and was thinking about your battery placement. How are you intending to route the cables from the battery without them being an eye sore ?

Re: An NZ TR1 project
Yes, this will be an issue, but I will do the best that I can to make the wiring unobtrusive as possible. I've had a good look at what other people have done so have some good ideas. It's been quite a few months since I posted anything on this forum, and it has not been because I have been inactive, I've just had other things happening in my life. Things like surgery on my right shoulder, an eight week, 20,000km ride around Australia, a holiday in the 'States where I found out that I had cancer in my jaw bone which I've just had removed by surgery (the cancer that is, some of the jaw bone has been kept for the meantime). ![]() But the good news is that work on the wiring has started again. It will probably be a few more weeks before it will be completed but the 'to do' list is getting smaller and smaller. At the moment the main points are;
But in the meantime it looks a bit of a mess. ![]() "Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get really interesting until 150" - Craig Bourne, Philosophical Ridings: Motorcycles and the Meaning of Life
Re: An NZ TR1 projectSorry to hear about your cancer situation, hope you will heal fully!
![]() Re: An NZ TR1 projectMan, I'm sorry to hear of your health issues. I hope all is well now. I love seeing all of the photos you've posted. Keep it up!

Re: An NZ TR1 projectIt really has been a year of ups and downs, but with hindsight they are really all ups. My shoulder is better than it has been in years, and they found the cancer and hopefully it all has been removed (I find out in another two weeks if more bone needs to be removed or if radiation treatment is necessary). I've had great care, and am on my way to a full recovery - things could be a whole lot worse. The only lingering down side is that there is another four weeks of eating baby food to go. YUM!!!
But it does give me a bit of an opportunity to get back into the project bike. Will try to post photos as work progresses. "Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get really interesting until 150" - Craig Bourne, Philosophical Ridings: Motorcycles and the Meaning of Life
Re: An NZ TR1 projectAlthough I haven't been posting much, stuff has been happening. I've had an idea about a modification to the tank which will make this build a bit different to most of the others. Because I have cut the rear part of the frame off the original air filter location was no longer there. This gave me a couple of options. One was to use pod filters, or the other was to relocate the air filter location. I chose the second option because the routing of the exhaust makes a pod unsuitable for the front cylinder, pods can cause difficulties with tuning, and I believe that there is better performance to be had with an air box.
Hopefully the photos will explain themselves. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by gs58 on Fri Jan 05, 2018 3:18 am, edited 1 time in total.

Re: An NZ TR1 projectI missed your last update, but that sounds like good news - hope things are still looking up! Cannot watch the pictures now (thanks to Fortinet) but will have a looksy later. Good choice using an air box

Re: An NZ TR1 projectAfter a lot of measuring and adjustments I'm pretty happy with the result. I did a quick calculation about how much fuel space this modification would take up and it worked out at less than 2.5 litres. I'm thinking that my butt will need a rest before this tank will empty.

![]() Re: An NZ TR1 projectI initially was trying to fit the filter on the side (like the MT01) but that would have made getting the tank off more difficult.
![]() Here's another couple of photos from different angles. I'm pretty pleased the way it has worked out. ![]() ![]() "Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get really interesting until 150" - Craig Bourne, Philosophical Ridings: Motorcycles and the Meaning of Life
Re: An NZ TR1 projectThat looks pretty neat! Considering the amount of cut and weld you've done on that tank that is very impressive!
I would have been tempted to make the 'intake mouths on the front of the tank a bit funnel shaped also maybe considered fitting some fly screen mesh..? For the top of the filter bolts I'd get some domed Allen head bolts.. Cheers, Rant.
