decoration only... dont sweat removing them, just dont mess with the support brackets, as they are mounted on a couple of your headbolts!

The purpose is to add weight to your bike and make it slower. (and to make it look more like a panhead harley, i suppose)

if you loosen the headbolts, you have the potential for leaks at the cylinder to block joint & at the head gasket between the head & cylinder. not going to leak for sure, but a veery real possibility. if the head bolts arent torqued correctly when you tighten them back up, you could also warp the head.... PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

Just digging up this old thread as im about to take my head cover brackets off...

Whats the problem with removing the bracket if replacing it with a similar thickness washer?
I would think none, but just looking for confirmation or anything not obvious.

Thanks

So I just pulled off the brackets, couldn't stand looking at them and was prepping my engine for paint anyway.

What made me confused is the fact that rather than bolting down the bracket with all 4 bolts, one of the bolts bypasses the bracket completely, using a standard copper crush washer instead. The other 3 have no washers but just bolt down against the non compressible steel bracket.
I know there is a lot of science in design these things so I don't want take that for granted, but I also don't want to over think it.

Therefore for anyone else looking to do this just take the bracket and cut out 3 washers from it. Thereby replacing as it was more or less. Let's just hope that setup wasn't actually sinking significant heat or something.
