must be some kind of insect that fills cavities with dirt?

or "mud wasps"... Guess it all comes down to how far north/south of I-80 or east/west of the Mississippi. :bg:

heard 'em called "dirt dauber" in North Texas and "mud dauber" in South Tex & La. [might relate to prevalent amounts of surface water around local]

a very industrious (obsessive/compulsive? = likes to plug every hole it finds) though not particularly aggressive type of wasp [usually blue-black or red-ish brown in color]
