Annoying metalic rattle (SOLVED)

PostAuthor: dmoore2222 » Wed Jun 14, 2017 10:44 am

Greetings All. Has anyone found the source of the annoying metallic rattle that happens at higher revs? I thought maybe it was coming from the mufflers but it seems more like the engine top or somewhere forward of that. It's more pronounced when the bike is in motion than just from rolling the throttle when the bike is at a stand still. I've removed the chrome valve covers thinking that may have been the problem but it doesn't seem so.Thanks.

is this a "new" issue, or has it always made the noise?

have you done a "chop" test @ speed to see what the plugs look like then? [using "kill" button @ speed - pull clutch, safely pull over and remove spark plug]

Thanks for the response, mark75. No I haven't done the chop test. This doesn't sound like the typical pre-ignition rattle. It's more of a ringing type sound that would come from metal vibration. That's why I initially thought it might be the chrome valve covers or even the heat shields on the mufflers. There's no loss of power. Everything is fine in that respect.

My :2cents:
Could it be the side or center stand contacting the exhaust pipe ?

I have had a similar experience, but have never got around to trying to trace it. With mine it sounds like thin sheets of metal vibrating, a bit like a Jews Harp and sounds as if from the front left pod. Does this sound like yours? I keep meaning to take the pod off and look inside

Thanks, jdgriffin. Yes. Very much that same sound but I know it's not from the pods because I removed mine.

I feel my new 2017 vstar 250 is quite noisy on top due to noisy timing chain.
My previous rides were bigger throatier sounding and hid the noisy timing chain.
The little ole 250 . . .meh. You describe what I hear. Hope this helps.
Chrome side goes up, rubber side goes down, NO exceptions!

I think I discovered the source of the rattle. It's the shroud over the the top muffler. I was sitting at a stop light and tapped on it and it made the same rattling sound I hear at high revs. There's a clamp welded on that snugs it up. I broke the head of the bolt off trying to tighten it so I drilled it out and ran a new bolt through and tightened it really snug. It got late so I'll test it today to see if that worked. It definitely isn't the timing chain type noise. This is clearly a metallic rattle from vibration.

Exactly Dmoore, I was trying to get a reply in to that but didn't quite have my strength or wits back. Sounds like the top end is going to shread itself, I happend to rest my boot on my exhaust and found the same and broke the same bolt head.

And really the engines are noisey, they are air cooled so no water mass to eat some vibes and its all metal thrashing around and not much more than a meter from the ear canal. Even though the chrome head covers are insulated, I think they act like amplifiers.

And at HIGH loaded engine speed like WOT in FOURTH at 80mph at the Virago dial the little mill starts the cooling fins to sing, as the three tuning fork symbol alludes to. You can rev a little past that before it hits the end of building power and its really time to shift. Its about 8,500rpm I estimate (totally unmodified induction/exhaust). (80mph Virago dial = 72mph actual for my YamRod)

I also suspicion the rockers noisey from side to side vibtation, they are dampened with the side springs but they move.

Glad you found your vibe, sorry to be after the fact, funny we broke the same thing.

Cheers and hoorahs

Well Rancher. It's been almost a year since I posted about this and it turns out the rattle doesn't seem to be coming from the exhaust pipes. It sounds more like the top end. I removed the chrome covers and it still persists. But it's not consistent. Sometimes I'll open the throttle and it won't rattle. Go figure.

OK. I'm repeating after myself: "I'm an idiot." After a year of chasing this metallic rattling sound I thought I would remove the exhaust system to give it a shake to see if there was anything rolling around in there that would cause a rattle. So I loosened the front cylinder left header bolt and then started on the right one. I barely moved the wrench and it loosened. It took at least 3/4 turn to tighten. Bingo! I took it for a nice long, hard ride and not a single noise. I'm still scratching my head wondering why this wan't the first thing I did. I guess sometimes the obvious is just too obvious, like I'm an idiot.
