Centre Stand Spring Installation

Centre Stand Spring InstallationI had the centre stand off so I could swap out the exhaust. When I went to reinstall it I was having a heck of a time trying to stretch it out to hook it back on.
I finally decided to lock one end in a vice and bend it over and place a big washer in between the coils. I did this with maybe a dozen washers. It extended the spring and made the end just barely able to sneak over the catch on the stand with a bit of encouragement from some pliers. Just a little trick, but I hope it helps someone out. before that there was much cursing.
![]() Re: Centre Stand Spring InstallationI know this is an older thread, but I've had good success with the centrestands putting the spring on when they are in the folded "up" position, this is where there's the least tension on the spring throughout the swing of the stand from what I can tell. Hold the stand in the "up" position with a jackstand or wood blocks and pull the spring over the peg with a pair of needle nose pliers or vise-grips, Has always worked for me...

Re: Centre Stand Spring InstallationOr, hook the spring on before you locate the hinge ends; do one side, and you'll have plenty of leverage to swing the other side on while stretching the spring. Figured this out after 20 minutes laying on my side with pliars, using up most of my reportoire of cuss words.

Re: Centre Stand Spring InstallationThe pulling force on the spring can be halved if a length of 'string' is used. Tie one end to the spring then loop it around a frame member and back towards the spring.....now pulling on the string (wrapped around a suitable bar as a handle) gives a two times mechanical advantage which certainly helps. Of course the string needs to be the strongest you can find and most likely needs to threaded back and forth so about 6 strands take the load.

Re: Centre Stand Spring InstallationThe easy way is to load the spring cracks with pennies or dimes and tape them in place before pulling stand up. Then pull stand up and do repair. The pennies keep the spring stretched.
Understanding this, if spring is compressed and off sticking pennies one by one with pliers/hammer shouldnt be too hard. Taping them up just keeps them from accidentally falling ojt befofe install.
