Clean those gauges! So you have been cruising up the road looking through your nice clean $250 helmet visor into those filthy gauges for years. You may not even realize how dirty they are, because they just look kinda...foggy at night. Well, it's time to clean them INSDE and OUT because it's easy as pie!
Clean the OUTSIDE of the glass first, so you can tell easily if the inside is clean once you get inside the gauges. First of all, remove the allen bolt that secures the top of your headlight assembly. Then you should be able to tilt it out far enough to get a phillips screwdriver in there to remove the chrome plastic covers. There are 4 screws. You can replace any of the bulbs at this point. To get further in, and clean the glass, you will need to remove the 4 little nuts and washers holding the gauges to the support. Then remove the 2 10mm nuts holding the support in place and remove the support completely. There is also a phillips screw in the center of the 2 gauges that must be removed. It holds a little cover over the center area behind the gauges. Now you can remove the 2 screws in each gauge that hold the white part to the front housing, and it should come apart easily. Clean, clean, clean the grime out of there, and blow the dirt out of the sockets for the indicator lamps while you are at it. I used Windex and a lint free cloth to get it spotless. Depending on the condition of the seals around this area, you may even have some dust on the faces of the dials themselves. I did, and cleaned it VERY carefully using a damp section of the aforementioned cloth. It took some finesse, as the paint on the face of the dials has seen alot of sunlight and will come off easily or smudge over the white areas if you are not careful. Now, put it all back together and enjoy your "NEW" gauges!
lol I took mine apart, and it was a pain... remove the whole thing and there's a bracket inside there. but it was almost two years ago, so i dont remember clearly... I just started diggin in since i was ditching them anyway.

Re: Clean those gauges!i know this is an old thread but what whatever... i am currently trying to figure out how to get the gauges apart, to mate the internals of one with a bad case, to the inside of one with bad guts.
i have destroyed the white plastic on the back of my speedo, and started removing chunks so i could get the guts out easily. it looks like the gold (chrome on lesser models) has all of the pieces laid into the back if it, glass lens, gauge face, guts and back, in that order, then have the rear lip crimped around it all afterwards, sealing it all together. i will post pics in a separate post, but the only way i see possible to get the gauges apart is careful dremel work just behind the chrome ring, cut all the way around the gauge, to literally cut the back off, separate the two halves, do what is needed to be done, and glue, epoxy, or cement the pieces back together. ![]() "more plating than the grille of a '59 Caddy." -85 xv1000 BACA
Re: Clean those gauges!Ok, here's a pic of the inner lip, the upper black ring, right on the outside of the white is actually the gold bezel, but it showed up black with the flash on my phone.

Re: Clean those gauges!A few different sized flat blade screw drivers and you can pry the chrome bezel lip up. Then pop it off and clean the glass. I knocked the lip back down with a drift and hammer.
Takes a bit of time and is tedious, but not terrible. Cheers, Jason.

Re: Clean those gauges!...... then why bother cleaning it,
if it will look like it has been attacked by a can opener? I must be missing some information..... M Truth........when the Word and the Deed become One.
