Any Key Gas CapOnce you take the back off, (two screws) (1st pic) you will see the back of the lock. (2nd pic). Flat washer comes off easily exposing a black rubber washer (3rd pic). If you carefully remove this black washer, you will expose the retainer of the lock. (4th pic, retainer position is circled) If you can push that retainer back (5th pick, only tumbler sticking up), you can push the core out the front. You do not need a key for this.

That's a good description nothing like good pictures, For me when I did mine I had two bike and two caps, one pitted and one perfect. I could not figure out how to remove the barrel as I was swapping tanks over . And I just happened to notice the chrome thingy was easier. So that the keys for bike two were all alike. I changed the cap and lock itself but with the nicer chrome. and helmet lock as well

Re: Can Key Tumbler in Gas Cap be Switched? As a locksmith, we preferred not to pry anything off when we knew how to get around it, leaves chances for scratching and possibly ruining the chrome piece of things that were customers. Nothing wrong with doing a complete swap like that, just have to be careful.

Re: Gas cap replacement?Follow Chappy Doo's instructions. In addition, I just did mine and I'll added some pics here that are clearer than one of those that he posted....it'll save you some frustration.
Just a couple of things to note as long as I'm on the subject. Be careful of the ball bearing in the cap. It's a check valve, don't lose it. Someone had my original cap apart and lost it ( not me ). I tried small screwdrivers, but ended up using the tip of a small pocket knife. You have a 1st Gen bike......get a 1st Gen cap or at least the cylinder, because the keys are different between 1st and 2nd Gen. Take the tumblers out of the cylinder , the lock will work without them and you can use your ignition key. You can use a 2nd Gen lock cylinder but the 1st Gen key won't go all the way in, however any key will work as long as you can get just the tip in the cylinder. _______________________________________________________________________
