Compatible Stator for 1980 Yamaha XS850SG

PostAuthor: Gd14760 » Fri Nov 13, 2020 4:33 pm

I have a 1980 Yamaha XS850SG Special. The engine will no longer fire. I believe the stator assembly to be to culprit. These bikes have an older type of charging system. I can't seem to find much information about the stator itself. I'm wondering if I can use a stator from a 750 or 1100.

I can't tell if the sku is Rick's electrics' sku, or if it's the yamaha sku.

my only experience with XS-650 was uncrate and assemble a couple in 1970, but here's a link that gives OEM part-numbers. >>> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... -generator

looks totally different from XV to me. (... coil pick-up, etc. also?)

if your battery is good and fully charged; I see little other charging-system connection to a starting issue.
rotor/stator only charge the battery (other than coil p/u)

the rotor, stator, p/u are clearly shown for XV. >>> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... /generator

but I never claimed to be a tech/mech, only share my experience (and opinions) with XV, some more knowledgeable source may chime-in for more-accurate in-put.

My ‘79 XS650 had points and condenser, I would look at that before the stator. I don’t think they changed it for 1980.

As luck has it, I have both bikes - an XV750 and a XV1000 plus an XS850 sidecar and no, they aren't even remotely alike.

I can have another look if you want, but from all I remember...

This is rumour for a permanent magnet rotor and stator set that could fit on XS triples, but they only thread that exists on this topic is about ten years old and the last one asking the thread originator was me.
(It was rumoured to be from some sort of Yamaha 750 though...)

Cheers,
Greg

I should have clarified. I was wondering if the xs750 or xs1100 stators would be compatible, not the xv series.

According to the parts list, no.

XS750 rotor and stator assembly should be (more or less) the same. Have you checked the regulator and made sure the alternator is actually getting excited. (Unlike XV stuff it will need some current to actually produce some electricity.)
