Cam Ticking Noise

PostAuthor: otyler14 » Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:34 pm

Hi all,

I’m trying to forgive out what this ticking noise is (see video)
[BBvideo 425,350]http://youtu.be/wqJCzH-l0oY[/BBvideo]

www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

Alittle background information: recent picked this up from an older gentleman who let it sit for a while and couldn’t get it started. I put a new battery in it and new clips, gears, etc to fix and future proof the starter. Once I got it started this ticking noise appeared and I’ve tracked it down to the rear cam area. Ive checked and set all the valve backlash to spec, made sure the top end was getting oil, checked the tensioners were tight, and finally made sure the timing was correct.

I am thinking it’s something with the cam or rockers but wanted another opinion before taking the cam out and potentially having to drop the engine to check valves. Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks Jake, also forgot to mention that it’s especially noisy above 1500 rpm. Lower than that it’s barely noticeable

Exhaust leaks have been known to cause ticking similar to that. Check the head to header and the header into muffler.

Not an exhaust leak just double checked, thinking it’s time to take the engine out and check out the head. Unless anyone else has some quick things to check

So I think I found the issue: Rocker pad is very warn (that bit of metal hanging off shows how deep into the pad it is) and the cam lobe height is out of spec. My only question is if I set the backlash on the intake and exhaust shouldn’t that have gotten rid of any gap that would’ve been making the ticking noise? :huh?:
