Hard starting 535

PostAuthor: Gypsydanger » Sun May 19, 2019 7:42 pm

Hello all
My wife’s 1987 xv535 has been getting hard to start lately. This started last fall. Rolls over slowly. Doesn’t want to catch. Sputters and sometimes backfires a bit. I replaced the stator and reg/rec. last year and installed a new battery this spring. I discovered that the ignition switch was corroded. Tried to clean it up. I ended up bypassing it and installed a toggle switch. Checked connections to the starter. Good. Once the bike starts it runs decently. The rear cylinder does run slightly hotter than the front. Smokes white smoke slightly. Seems to come and go. I checked valve adjustment. Intake and exhaust were both tight in the rear cylinder. Adjusted them to within specs. Made no difference.
Scratching my head on this one. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the starter turns the engine over slowly, make sure the brushes in the starter are good and the armature is not dirty. Also, the 535 had an issue with the starter clutch, check it out and make sure it works properly.. What plugs are you using?

Yes, I plan on checking the starter. And the starter clutch was replaced two years ago. I use NGK.

If you can find them up there, change the plugs to Autolite AP 63 Platinum or the Bosch equivalent. Gap them at 0.028 thousands.
