90' virago 1100 coils

PostAuthor: shdwdip » Sat Apr 27, 2019 8:24 pm

was wondering if i would be able to use coils from a vstar 650 or 1100 on a virago 1100? turns out one of my coils are bad, the shop told me the coils are 160 something for one ad 280 for the other, really dont want to spend that on coils, and im not sure on quality of ebay ones. sorry if this is the wrong forum

Not sure about swapping coils as you've suggested. But, make sure it's the coils and not just bad plug wires. In the past couple of years, I've found that in two separate cases, a bad "coil" test actually were bad plug wires. Since they're glued into the coils, and the "coil test" was bad, I had nothing to lose by trying to remove the plug wires from the coils. If I caused damage to the coils, and/or wires, no loss. In both cases, there was corrosion in the bottom of the socket in the coil around the little screw that makes contact with the wire. I cleaned that up, cut a bit off the end of the wires, and bingo, resistance tests were back to spec. and the coils had new life. It's worth a try instead of putting out big bucks for coils.

Here's some better prices on stock1100 coils. Check items 8-9; ... ectrical-1
Also you may be able to find a used set on eBay or at a MC salvage yard.
