engine cranks a couple of times before seeing a spark

PostAuthor: EXOTERO » Tue Dec 04, 2018 5:10 pm

Hi ,
i have a 1998 yamaha xv535 which i purchased from an old fellow who had it basically disposed. I have done many fixes to it and even had it running for a weak until it died, did a lot of test and concluded it was the TCI since i had spark only on one cylinder and everything else tested fine.i got one from CARMO and the bike started fine but had carb issues . so i went ahead and fixed it as well (pilot jets got clogged) after it started fine for a while until it would not idle anymore.now i did more test and found something odd. while checking for sparks at the spark plug i noticed the engine would have to turn a number of times before seeing an actual spark its not too dull but not too bright eighter. any ideas what i can do here?

Well..could be number of things at this point and "how" you actually "tested" to come to the conclusion that everything else was fine. First, get ahold of a service manual and do the coil, secondary/primary, resistance/ohm testing to eliminate that part of the electrical maze. Could possible be something as simple as bad coil(s), wire(s), plug cap(s) or even weak battery. Make sure "all" connections are super clean/shiny and tight.

Thanks for answering , in the manual i have it gives resistance test at 68 degrees Fahrenheit but where i live its always over 84 degrees . would that affect the readings i get?

Increased temperature increases the resistance of conductors.

don't overlook the pick-up coils, and resistors in the plug caps

Thus when temperature goes up, resistance goes up. For some materials, resistivity is a linear function of temperature. The resistivity of a conductor increases with temperature. In the case of copper, the relationship between resistivity and temperature is approximately linear over a wide range of temperatures.

The difference in resistance due to temperature increase will be only a few ohms.. That's why there is a spec on the resistance tests.... Sorry can't find the right word..... As long as your readings on the components are within spec, you should be OK>
