82 XV920 Starter Relay/Solenoid Issues

PostAuthor: jeepme79 » Fri Oct 26, 2018 10:23 am

Hi all,

Recently my virago wouldn't start - dead stick at the starter button, but when I crossed the leads on the starter solenoid next to the battery, it kicked over. So the first thing I did was hit Amazon and picked up a replacement. After installing the new solenoid, as soon as I connect the battery the starter engages, even with the key off. My first thought is this could be a defective part, but is there a chance something else is messed up in the wiring?

Thanks for your help!

Most likely a bad part... With the battery disconnected, take your VM set on Ohms x 1 scale and see if you get a reading across the two large posts. If you do, the contacts are shorted.. If no reading, make the same check across the two small posts. If no reading there is a short in the starter button wiring somewhere. Make the same check between the two wires that connect to the small terminals on the solenoid with the solenoid disconnected. Post what you find.

The first replacement solenoid tested out bad. I just replaced it with another new part and I'm now back to the original issue. When I push the starter button the headlight goes out and the electrical system reacts as if it's about to start, but i'm not getting anything from the solenoid or starter.

Kinda a pain, but if you could map out what/where you got the wiring, could be a help to seeing if something is amiss.

Did you do the tests I asked you to do? If so, post what you found..
