STEERING FRAME BEARING CONE REMOVAL! HELP!

PostAuthor: royle-2008 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 7:23 am

Surely there are people out there that have had to replace the bearing cones on their 250s! How the hell did you do it?! The only suggestion I’ve had is to tack a weld on the cone itself so I can tap it out, hopefully someone else has a handy tip? Pleas help! My new ones will be arriving soon.

I've always used a drift and a small sledge hammer. Works every time.

I think I spend 4-5 hours getting the bearing races out of my TR1. There was absolutely no lip I could put a drift on. I the end I had someone hold a screwdriver in the little slot between the bearing race and the frame - from the bearing end, then beat on that with a metal stick through the neck. Hard to describe, but it took forever.

If I had access to a welder that day, I'd have tried that method also.

Well, if that’s the case..I guess I’ll have to blow the dust off the old welder in the garden shed and learn how to use it then haha I wasn’t sure if there was some DIY magical tip someone may have suggested! Thanks though fellas, I’ll keep ya posted!

Not sure why you are having difficulties. Can you post some pics so the rest of can see something out of place? Like Hellgate said all you need is something long enough to reach the race and use a hammer to knock it out. I have done it to numerous Bikes with a Punch and hammer.

I can't speak for the original poster, but on mine (83 tr1) the race was flush with the frame, there was about a 0.5mm gap, but since nothing stuck out it was impossible to get any footing on it, even with a long slim screwdriver or drift.

Seems odd here too. I've put a propane torch to the neck and the parts usually fall out. Worst case: "Dremel"!
