Engine stand mount

PostAuthor: wkdenton » Tue Oct 03, 2017 7:27 pm

Hey all, I have a VStar 1100 engine that I'd like to hang on an automotive engine stand so I can work on it w/o it wriggling around on the floor of my mc lift. Has anyone tackled this issue with an XV1100 or 750 engine, and if so can you share your config for the mount that you used to mate the engine to the stand? I've never used an engine stand before so I have no idea where to begin.

TIA...

:yup:
I'd bail on the auto engine stand and mount it to a board with casters or a piano dolly from Harbor Freight.
That way you can attach the frame backbone and build the bike up from there.

Thanks, but i already have it on a dolly w casters. I'm looking to work on the engine, not mount it to a bike at this time...

Since you said you have a m/c lift, raising/lowering it won't be a big deal. You could fashion some sort of "V" cradle configuration from 2x4s, ontop of a piece of 3/4" plywood. Securing the whole thing to the lift as you'd want. And..using the engine stand as a sort of fork lift, for the whole thing, when needed. Of coarse, would depend on what type of engine stand if used. Cherry picker, bolt on..etc etc.

Engine stands have only one use that I can think of. I can think of platform that will serve multiple uses, I used one many times for through the wall AC units.

Build your cradle and the engine on the lift, adjustable working height. After your finished, I'm sure you'll find other uses for the cart.

$169.99 at Harbor Freight, 500 lb capacity. Use the 20% off coupon and it's $135.99.

Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions. I think my twisted mind has come up with a solution. I'll post it when I'm finished building it, strictly for your amusement! :cl:

I'm just spitballin' but I suppose you could run some long bolts or all-thread through a couple of the engine stand attachment arms and slide the case onto those bolts. Not sure how safe or stable that would be...
