Parts Diagrams and Factory Service Manuals

PostAuthor: tagedieb » Tue Apr 12, 2005 10:26 pm

Many of the links to manuals in this thread no longer work. Read through if you like and find the ones that do or not, the choice is yours.

I do not want to trouble the late Mr. Wheeler's family, or their business.

The manuals are coming off the net. NO MORE MANUALS ON THE NET.

If you need manuals, contact me via PM. I will help you.

I don't check this post, so it won't help to reply to this post. You have to PM me.

I apologize if your PM's have gone unanswered for a while. I'm very active on Viragotech when my bike is having trouble and out riding the rest of the time.

tagedieb,

Thanks for hosting the files. I was just looking for the service manual.

However, I think the service manual pdf file is corrupt. I couldn't open XV1100G_GC - 1995.PDF either. The others are OK.

Thanks.

Robert

EDIT: those two files were corrupt, because they only partially finished uploading.

Everything is now updated, and should be working fine.

Please contact me if you'd like to contribute.

A WORD OF CAUTION

PostAuthor: bykrmom » Wed Apr 20, 2005 8:44 pm

Just a word of caution about legal issues over the Copyright on Bill's CD data...

If you give away a copy or two of a CD you purchased, to a freind or two for their own use, you're not strictly violating copyright.

However think about this - making the data available on line for free could possibly open you and Matthew up to legal problems - bigtime.

bwenterprises copyrighted that CD, and Bill's family now owns that after his death. Unless you got prior permission to publish in writing from them, Bill's family could sue you for taking their business should they ever decide to start marketing them again.

I am NOT a lawyer and this shouldn't be considered legal advice. But use caution. At least remove the sticky status of this offer so that it won't be as noticable to anyone looking for a legal fight to make unearned $$$ in court.

Sorry to be a wet blanket - I'm just trying to help. :con:

I will defer to Matthew, whatever he thinks is best.

If you guys want to send the web address by private email to whoever is in need, and remove the posting, that's fine by me.

I don't want to rock the boat.

I couldn't access the files? I'm getting a "403 Forbidden" error.

I'm looking for all XV535 related stuff. Any chance you could mail the manual to me? conor.mooreatgmail.com

Thanks :burnout:

Most of the technical information (service manuals / parts catalogs / operators manuals) are “public domain" because once the chain from the author (copyright) has been broken, you can't really (practically) be prosecuted for copying a copy of a copy.

I’ve been wanting to buy a CD parts catalog for my XV750 from eBay. I’m sure the guy selling it has copied it multiple times and is “resellingâ€

What you said is correct, in that technically the manuals themselves are not going to break any copyright laws upon dissemination.

However there is a small catch. Bill Wheeler bought the rights to that particular set of supplimental information giving him full legal hold over the suppliments supplied at the time on the XV line by Yamaha. He then compiled the information on to the CDs, and including some of his own work, like the used bike buyers guide and other small additions. Thus his copyright notice clearly priinted on the label. (I even copy that copyright by hand onto the copies I give away)

So while the supplying technical information itself would not violate any copyright laws, making the entire CD by way of a CD "image" (the web link that was posted) there certainly is then a copyright violation. Not against Yamaha, but against the copyright holder for the CD compilation. Thus the use of the CD to create the "image" would, if they chose to, violate the BWCycle copyright and also violate the families right to sell the information on the CD at a profit. (restraint of trade)

Now - I admit, I don't know the Wheeler family and I'm guessing they wouldn't make an issue of it, especially now that Bill has died and they may not choose to continue the business or the sale of the CDs. That being said, I don't have a guess at the character of any ambulance chaser "lawyers" that might find the information and "act on the behalf" of the family to get their piece of the action.

So like I said, I was just urging caution. More than a few times, I have copied the CD I paid for and given it away. This however isn't a violation because the people that got them got an exact copy and could not or would not have been able to afford to purchase one on their own. To limit the chances of any liability on my part, I didn't even ask for the cost of the CD or the jewel case I ship them in, or the postage. That way I have made 0 profit and cannot be charrged wit a violation on copyright or anything else like restraint of trade, etc.

So - the bottom line is, if the guys publish it and allow it to be viewed or downloaded by anyone who happens across the information, they take the risk alone that some unscrupulous bastard might want to get money off of them for their otherwise noble efforts. I have seen similar things happen, and in fact have recently been the victim of that type of person at a cost of at least $130,000 dollars (maybe more).

I guess it's a crap shoot...but I would never do it, not again.

Here's my two bits:

The legal system is the U.S. is a bloated behemoth, but that doesn't mean I want to mess with it.

Nor do I want to mess with the late Mr. Wheeler's family, or their business.

The manuals are coming off the net. NO MORE MANUALS ON THE NET.

If you want/need manuals, contact me. I will help you.

I fight authority, authority always wins. Sing it with me now.

Didn't see this but problem is even Bill doesn't own the picture or tech info. He just gathered other copyrighted info and put it in one easy package.

[though official Yamaha service book have lose copyrights in them, its Haynes and Clymer that get fussy. They want their $10-15 cut]

Manuals on CD of any kind are illegal to a point.
But why I only have tech info on this site / server. I could scan every page of every book but that goes above and beyond fair use laws.

Just make sure and edit out any personal tips from Bill, anything he wrote himself. Rewrite it and its now your work.

People do it every day. Read 5 book on how to play poker and write your own.

I know for a fact that people have copied David Perish work for the start shim kit. But they took his info and wrote it their way. I still have papers from when I bought his kit. To scan them for download would be wrong but reading it and writing it my way would be fine.

Hi
I was just wondering if there was any news on the virago CD. As it appears that ther hasn't been any posts for a while.

I've tried to visit the late Bill Wheelers website but it no longer exists.

I have been trying to find a parts manual for a 535. As I have found a uk site that will try to get parts if you have the number [url=http://www.btinternet.com/~hawkshaw.motorcycles/toolpics.html]

I agree that it sounds like a far too useful resource to be lost.
