The I D 10 T light switch

PostAuthor: drainplug » Fri Feb 07, 2020 8:48 pm

Or should I say the oil level light switch.
Is it really necessary to have this thing on the bike?
It is the source of amusement on those (hopefully) long rides when suddenly the light comes on and you worry whether or not the oil has suddenly escaped it's confinement and you will fear the sound of various other parts leaving your wallet.

I haven't read anything about actually removing this redundant switch. Is it possible to make a plate that could seal the hole that is left?

More questions from an idle mind, which does happen when I can't just ride this thing.

JMO, always thought this switch was unnecessary..also have no idiot lights on my bike. The unit is still in the engine case..just not hooked up. Never found the need to plug the hole with any sort of plate or anything, since the switch also acts like a good seal for the hole. In my case, been like that since the 90s. Guess, I've never gave it a second thought. Bout the only way a person would lose oil, would be if the drain plug popped out or ya hit something big/sharp enough to punch a hole in the case. Which, I would think you'd have bigger problems, than a red light, if that happened. That's not to take away from people who need or want a red light. I just find looking at the sight glass just as easy. Kinda like turn signals..really needed? Nah... :bg:

I have a LOT of bucks I'm going to have to spend on my BMW resto work. Found out the trans and clutch need major work, spelled $$$$$$$$

Still have the winter blahs and looking for something that's not too tough but still improves the basic bike.
I've read here some folks have had the seal leak. I'm basically a tinkerer at heart and just can't let well enough alone'

I drilled mine out and converted it to an oil temp sender. But not for a light (EFI).

My oil light has been glowing red since I did the rebuild of my motor. I suppose some day I might fix it...or not.
