Anyone have pictures of first gen seat mounting hardware?

PostAuthor: extremeodd » Tue Oct 08, 2019 12:46 am

So my bike is missing every single piece of seat mounting hardware save the metal tab on the rear and for the life of me I cannot find any pictures of how the seat actually attaches.

Does anyone have any pictures of how a first generation (81 xv750) seat mounts and what hardware is used?
I've determined that I need a latching bar assembly but there are 2 types that I can find on ebay, one type is listed as the correct year/model but I cannot make heads of tails of how it would attach and the other is for an 82 xv920 and it looks perfect and appears to be exactly what I need despite being for the wrong model/year.

I've found several of these listed for the 81 xv750 but I cannot figure out how you would attach it to the bottom of the seat
https://www.ebay.com/itm/81-87-Yamaha-V ... 3570835204
Where this one is clear on how you'd attach it to the seat

No clue how'd you actually get that 2nd one to release after snapping the seat down, that's why I'm here asking for help.

EDIT: Nevermind, found an ebay listing that showed the seat with the brackets attached. it is the first item

Probly why Yamaha has always been considered the "parts bin company" of the motorcycle world (most of the time). That second pic doesn't look like any of em.

Seats different, latch/brackets numbers listed the same on ('81)750/('82)920J:
https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempar ... 8701c/seat
https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempar ... 875d2/seat

Except for the 920R/920RH/920RJ:

https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempar ... 875fd/seat
https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempar ... 87047/seat
https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempar ... 20rj-parts

Somethings are whole lotta fun keep'n straight. And..not sure "I" got it down, right. But..looks like you got it figured, anyway :;:

Oh lordy the depth of the variations on just the first couple of years is far deeper than I would have ever expected!

Thank you so so much for cluing me into yamahapartshouse, those blown up diagrams are beyond killer for figuring out where stuff is supposed to be along with helping show me what I might be able to exchange with other models. There is nothing better than frankensteining a vehicle to fit your desires using bits from other models/years.

With such wide part compatibility and availability, searching eBay for "Yamaha xv" and hitting "used only" has been too much fun for dreaming up modifications/'upgrades' on the cheap. Like throwing on the riser and clip-on xv920 bars(~$60) or switching over to an 81-83 xv920 seca gauge cluster ($35), or even seeing if there is a seat with the rear storage box that would work with the weird 4x7 tank ($80-120). Man, I'm loving these old Yamaha cruisers

Yea..Babbitts (yamahapartshouse) is where I usually shop, if need be. Usually shipped next day. IMO: Their site's easier to navigate than others. Partzilla, Bikebandit, MRC... same process and cheaper at times if ya don't wanna deal with fleabay descriptions. Either/or..you'll have the part numbers to dig around.

At the very least they will be an awesome source of diagrams that tell me what parts are actually called, not to mention they have the little odds and ends that aren't typically listed on ebay used.

Such as gauge cluster dampeners, I lost one when trying to diagnose why the tach wasn't working and they are not available anywhere on ebay without buying the entire bracket. yamahapartshouse has them for just $5.47 each.
