yamaha XV400 Special -83 - high pitch sound

PostAuthor: dondan » Wed May 15, 2019 11:26 am

Hi,

I recently bought a Yamaha XV400 Special -83.

- it has a cardan shaft
- mileage 9 046

I makes a high pitch sound when on high gears and it seems to be coming from the front of the bike. When i switch to second or first gear the sound disappears.
What i can recall the sound is not present when on high speed on second gear.

I'm not really sure how to pinpoint this furtheror are there any out there who encountered something similar?
The only thing i noticed so far is the front brake caliper, i can wiggle it a little.

Hope you can give me some advice on this,

Regards
Dan

If it is the high pitch engine/transmission sound, it is normal. Some bikes have it more than others. If you can, record it and post the audio here.

I assume you have the single front brake with "one" pin running thru the center for mounting to fork? The caliper will have a little wiggle. Don't try to take it out. Check your brake pads..see if you can move them. They should be semi loose in the caliper. Wheel bearings dry and/or worn out? Axle set square to bearings and pinch bolt? All possible, I suppose.

Howdy Dan.

Welcome to VTF.

XVs are pretty 'vocal' engines anyhoo (esp. the starter), just be certain your oil is correct (level, fresh, grade, filter) , keep the battery charged, and ride it like you stole it.
[if it ain't broke, don't fix-it]

they are robust and like vigorous exercise, and will last a long-time when properly maintained.

Thanks guys!

Filters are all new aswell as the battery.

I uploaded an audiofile on this "high pitch sound", at around 7:20 you will hear it.

POKk1iH" class="postlink" rel="external">High pitch sound

I will take a closer look at the bearings and it's possible they are worn out since i know the tires are several years old and in really bad condition.(thanks for the tip!)

Do you know any dealer who ships to Norway (north europe)?
Since the tires are somewhat rare i have a hard time finding these sizes:

Tires (tubeless)
Front: 3.00S19
Back: 130/90-1667H
