Parts List and Viewing Photos

PostAuthor: Steve_White88 » Mon Oct 29, 2018 1:55 pm

I have the dreaded "box of Rocks" starter issue and while it is still in the garage and won't be taken out over winter I am looking to the upgrade to the Gen 2 Starter.

Does anyone have the parts list and procedure to hand that can be sent across?

Also does anyone know how I am able to view photos in previous threads?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Steve :)

That depends in large part on the threads containing the photos. Some have been attached to the post(s), which may require 5 by you before you can see them. Some photos have been hosted on other sites such as photobucket and you may never be able to see them.

The best thing for you to do is post the links to the threads you want to see and I'll see if I can help.

That is the best way to go if you can find the components from an XV1000 or maybe a TR1 for you. An alternative method is using the starter and side cover from an ‘86 or later XV750 or XV1100. You have to add shims to the pickups in the latter case.

You're absolutely right about the "if" factor. Some relatively easy, some expensive etc etc etc. Kinda all over the board. Guess I should have used the words "Scavenger Hunt" instead of treasure.

I posted this once earlier today, but somehow it didn't make the cut. So I will try again.... It is very difficult to find good XV1000 parts due to so many people wanting to do this upgrade. What you can find is expensive. You can use the parts from an 1100 86-90, but you will need to build a spacer for the stator and PU coils to use the 920 parts or use the flywheel, stator and PU coils from the doner bike.

Thanks...Jake for posting this. I "always" forget to mention those (upgrade) parts are from the 1000 or TR1..only. :):

Just to confirm the highlighted parts in the attached image are what is required to upgrade from Gen1 to Gen2 starter (plus of course the case).

My main confusion is if I need to get Gen 2 Idler Wheel, Idler gear No. 2,Idler gear No.1 and starter motor spring. Or were these common between gen 1 and gen 2.

Thanks

Steve

All you need is idler gear number two set of two gears. The spring was eliminated in the later version of the #2 idler gear... My advise would be to get a new #2 idler gear...

Hi,

Thanks for reply Bill. Much appreciated.

I've been following an xv750 1996 engine on EBay. This has the starter, solenoid, covers, starter mechanism etc.

Will this be fully suitable to strip out the components. Or will i need TCI, flywheel and other parts from this bike?

Kind Regards,

Steve

Yes you can use the parts from the 750. You do not need the TCI or flywheel, but you will need to make or have someone make for you, spacers for the stator and pickup assembly.

This was discussed recently when a member did the conversion and couldn’t get spark viewtopic.php?f=11&t=60418&p=484043#p484043, I posted two links in a reply on that thread, you can find the answers by following the links.

Hi Guys,

So I managed to complete the treasure hunt for all the bits for the upgrade. Just missing a couple of circlips but I can get hold of those easy enough.

I am now trying to figure out the spacers for the pickups and the stator.

The pickups look quite straight forward from the links Jake sent across as there is a drawing in the treads for those spacers, however I am struggling a little with the stator.

Attached is a picture of the spacer that was in the case when I opened it up. Do I need to machine this back to the 0.35" or do I need an additional spacer above this that adds a further 0.35".

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I've been scratching my head for a little while now.

Thanks in advance,

Steve
