virago 400 diaphragm replace

PostAuthor: sinoda » Sun Sep 09, 2018 9:47 am

Hi to all
I replaced the diaphragms on my virago.
the old one had small tears in it.
after installing the new diaphragm i noticed that the bike is not running the same, i cannot explain they way it behaves but it worked better with the old diaphragm that had tears on it .
I kinda want to put back the old one.

why is it than the old one works better ? yes I installed it correctly, and yes it has sealed properly ,

Just a guess, but it could be that the new diaphragm has put the carbs out of synch. I'd try re-synchronizing them, or at least checking that to see if it makes a difference.

Very well could be... :yup: ...And/or with the new diaphragms, the carbs are operating more efficient (as in the slides/needles), and you're looking at it running in a richer condition. As possibly, before, the carbs were suck'n more air than fuel..hence, was on the lean side.

You may have to re-tune, re-synch both carbs. Check out the last two posts in this thread for a couple links to good information on that process:

ok guys thanks ! but i found the problem
Theres a teeny-tiny oring at the lower part of the carb right beneath the diaphragm , and it must have slipped out when I was replacing the diaphragm .I struggled to put it back in its seat since it had expanded alot, but once in its place the bikes works like a charm !
was my mistake after all . perhaps someone will find this useful
