buffeting from windshield

PostAuthor: billygee » Mon Nov 13, 2017 9:54 pm

I have the '99 XV1100 Special with the Memphis Shades Fat windshield. The top of the windshield comes to the tip of my nose and really keeps the wind off my chest and face while being able to see over the top of the windshield. My problem is that there is a ton of buffeting in front of my face happening no matter how much I adjust the windshield. The wind is coming up my legs from underneath the windshield, up my chest and up my face which cause my glasses to shake while riding. Hate that effect but love that I can ride at 125KPH while not having to hold tight on the grips from the wind pushing me back.

I have tried Memphis Shades' lowers but they had little effect in cutting down the updraft. I am wondering if anyone has tried lowers that mount to the lower tubes and come up like a wedge. I know there was a pair of those for Viragos in the aftermarket but those are almost as rare as hens teeth to find new or used so I was wondering if anyone has any and a template to make them from sheet metal?

Albeit not pretty, your best bet would probably be to fit some kind of spolier at the top of the screen, something in the reign of this, but there are many versions out there http://www.twistedthrottle.com/mra-x-cr ... e-included

:yup:

I put the MRA spoiler on my last bike, and thoroughly recommend them. Either that, or fit a shorter screen altogether.

These are the MS lowers I had before. Little improvement but not enough as they were not low enough and since I added a lightbar, I could not use them anymore. The wind would still come up my legs and chest..

These ones are more what I am looking for...

The first would not work for me as I would be force to look thru it instead of over it.

The second may be worth exploring.

Even the first can work because even mounting it on front of your screen with the same height can alter the wind flow enough. You could experiment with some stiff cardboard and duct tape if so inclined.

The thing is, is that the buffeting is NOT coming from over the windshield, which this attachment would address. It's coming from under the windshield where the wind goes upwards my jacket and flows upward into my face, which the proper lowers will block.

Yea..I was (kinda) following this thread and wondering why most were concentrating on an upper deflector.
