Gen 2 wheels on gen 1

PostAuthor: Christopher150806 » Thu Oct 12, 2017 3:17 am

Hey guys,

I've read a few threads relating to swapping the wheels from a gen 2 to gen 1 but they all seem to talk about either 1100cc or wire wheels. Those people mentioned that you would need the gen 2 drum brake cover and axle.

I'm looking at buying a set of gen 2 cast spokes wheels from a 1984 xv750 but unsure if it will be a straight swap with my current 1982 xv750, could anyone shed some light on this?

Also would the front fender of a gen 2 work on a gen 1

Picture is the donor I'm looking at

You need the brake parts from the donor bike because the Gen II has a larger diameter drum than all other big engine Viragos.

To use the dual disk front wheel, you'll need the front forks too.

Sorry, I didn't read past the drum brake question. As to the fender up front; no, it will not work with the old forks. Nor will, as mentioned, the wheel, at least not without mods; you need special wheel bearings or a spacer because the axle diameter differ. You will also likely need new end spacers because I think the Gen 2 forks are spaced wider IIRC. Then you need to find a disc of the correct diameter that is spaced correctly for the unusual Gen 1 caliper. Basically it's far simpler to transplant the complete front end from the Gen 2 - you can do a search and find how-tos on this forum.

For the front you will need (as mentioned before) the forks discs callipers , yoke etc etc... I managed to get a Progressive Lowering kit for mine which took 2" off the fork length.
Then you need the bearing kit to fit the Gen2 yoke (trees) to the Gen1 Frame.
You will gain..
1.Dual twin pot callipers. (not really necessary but nice.)
2. 39mm forks :):
3. A different style of wheel.
