Fire retardant accumulating in Great Lakes sediment

January 13, 2006 - DETROIT (AP) - An old chemical used as a fire-retardant coating for wires and computer cables has been found in Great Lakes sediment and game fish.

The discovery is a surprise to federal regulators. But the health effects of Dechlorane Plus on humans and aquatic life are unclear.

Few studies have been done on the chemical, which went into production in 19- 64. It was discovered in sediment or air samples in Lakes Michigan, Erie, Ontario and Superior by researchers from the University of Indiana.

The university's research also says it was found in the tissue of walleye in Lake Erie.

Occidental Chemical is one of the only manufacturers of Dechlorane Plus in the United States. It says it is safe for people and other animals. The company says it has no plans to test the product.

"It's ready for just about any sort of on-roading, and, best of all, in the process it can get the rider emotionally charged without ever needing to drag a peg or peg a redline. The Virago is a custom style bike with a wide range of capabilities. There is something very special that relentlessly compels you to just get on and ride- somewhere, anywhere
