Single carb tips, tricks, and advice please?

PostAuthor: SalSageV » Wed Nov 08, 2017 7:02 pm

I have come to find out that my mistake on one of my carbs is either not repairable or going to be very expensive. So I have opted to at the very least try the single carb conversion before spending a god awful amount of money for a maybe possible repair, if I even decide that route. I have found many threads about how to make single carbs and such but my main question is what I should I start my main jet at? I have found most people go to about 140ish and I'm planning on getting a K&N cone filter. Not sure if it's just kind of up in the air or if that would be a good place so start. Also a good place to get the jets would be a big help too. I will update when I start building the manifold and such with pictures. May be a bit but it doesn't sound too hard to make luckily.

it being a '93 shouldn't be too hard to find the parts you might need ---> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... carburetor

Same reason I converted to single carb. One was in bad shape, not worth fixing. Does your bike use the mikunis? if so, EBay sells jet kits for pretty cheap. All different sizes and some come with other jets and needles too.
IMO, 1 carb is much better, ill never go back

I have the Mikuni Carbs. Luckily the one that got messed up is not the one with the throttle attached so I won't have to fumble through switching that over. I'm hoping I don't have to mess around too much with rejetting but we shall see. I should be able to start working on it fairly soon. Running into a bit of a financial situation right now but I'll be right as rain in a month. Hopefully I can have this done by the new year at the latest. Should be able to at least get it to fire sooner though.

You will be needing a main jet of 1.4mm for stock pipes, 1.5mm for after market pipes and 2.0mm with wide open pipes. I converted a 1st gen Hitachi and they had a fixed pilot. Ran ok with that pilot. My setup was 1.7mm main and fixed pilot

Awesome! That is exactly what I needed to know. I have basically stock everything, save my TCI box but that doesn't matter here. My pilot jet is fixed. Where could I get a good price on the parts I need? Plus I want to be sure it is the correct part. It'd suck if I ordered for a different model. Haha.

I drilled my main out with a .068 drill bit. That's 1.7mm

Even easier. Just a straight hole? Should I start with closer to 1.4 and move up if I need to?

Yep, straight hole. I started with the 1.7mm and work good for me. Good idea to start smaller I guess.

My pilot screws are not but I thought my pilot jet was. I could be wrong, I'm still learning all of this. Lots of little parts.

I never did anything to my pilot but I drilled the main jet out with a 1/16. so pretty much 1.6mm. I also put 3 washers on my needle. To raise it up a hair. 1/2mm each washer. I think I may go to a harley 1200 carb this winter. The 1st Gen hitachis can be a little picky sometimes.

That's the carb I'm running now, the harley CV carb. I jet mine 50 pilot, 185 Main and two washer's. Two turns out on the air screw.
