What the heck did I do wrong(SOLVED)

PostAuthor: stockyb36 » Tue Oct 10, 2017 3:22 pm

Hey guys,
Sorry to bring such an old post up. its the closest I could find to my setup. I just got done installing my carb(used one of my original hitachis). I re-jetted and got the little filter for the fuel line from the pump.
Im using the intake from sea-ray-guy on ebay.
I have no vacuum leaks, all looks good and is hooked up correctly.

So here is my problem:
Carbs are totally empty, I switch it to run with the key on and the pump gets fuel to the carbs. She starts right up and sounds and runs amazing for about 10-15 seconds. Then she dies and pump starts pumping fuel again and it starts pissing out of the overflow and the intake!!
What the heck did I do wrong??

Ive tried this with the stock jet and no washers on the needle/Also tried it with my jet I drilled out to 1.6mm and 2 washers on the needle.
Any help would be awesome! I really just want to get her on the road!

Thanks for reading guys,

Bruce

Sure sounds like float adjusted so needle never shuts of flow. Or..needle stuck open.

i never made any adjustments to the floats though? Would the float position need to be changed after going to single carb?
The reason im going to single to begin with is because she started running with half power(felt like only one cylinder was firing and i had to pretty much WOT her just to prevent stalling)
I like the single carb look, sound and i don't care much for speed(not with this toy)

Thanks for helping

Split to a new thread and new topic.

Your problem is unrelated to the previous thread, and posting to that thread with your issue is thread jacking, especially one 5 years old and (SOLVED).

Posting to a (SOLVED) thread should only be done if new information is added.

This was my point, questioning the float. Apparantly you've been into the carbs. Could have accidentally, for whatever reason, bent the float needle tab down as for the float needle not seating correctly. This is the only way a carb can flood out, is thru the float needle. Hence why it started up the first time (chamber empty)..then flooded, then died, then refilled, but already flooded, no fire, then spewed out the intake.
My whole point is, if something is 'not' shutting off the fuel at the correct level in the bowls, it will run (for the 10-15 secs as you said), the flood out. The fact that the pump started back up "after" dying out the first time and the flow wouldn't stop, was the key.

I took them apart and played with the floats and needle a little bit. It seemed like the needle was getting stuck inside the fuel inlet. I completely stripped the inlet apart and cleaned everything really good. I even shot some air through all the holes and gaps I can see. A bunch of crap was coming out when I did that.
AND.... EUREKA!!!! she starts the instant I press the start button and has never run better. So much more power in the first 3 gears it seems with the single carb setup. Thanks flyingdog for all the input. you got me digging around right where I should of.

Also a shout out to searayguy321, he helped me out a bunch with troubleshooting and his intake manifold(as ugly as it is) works beautifully.
Shes running better than she ever has!!

Good to hear..yep, don't take much to screw with the float needles. Little crap here or there, can act like glue. Lotta times trying to get the bowls back on when they're still on the bike can tweak them just enough to ruin your day. That's one advantage of having a single carb stuck out there in the open.
