750 engine swapHi hope you can help. I have an early 750 Virago with the bendix type starter which never worked so have changed the motor to the later type with the updated starter system. All fitted OK but have a problem the wires coming from the generator are different? So what do I need to do, is it a case of changing the generator internals into the new motor or is there a easier fix. The reason for the motor change was because of the starter problems. Please help it must be a tried and tested swap. Thanks
![]() Re: 750 engine swapIgnition and alternator differ, so you will need a new R/R, new TCI and new coils. Unless it is possible to retrofit the items from your old engine? That is something I cannot answer. Also, all Gen II 750 engines are not the same, so you need to verify what system is fitted to your particular engine.
![]() Re: 750 engine swapCan I take the internal parts from the old casing and refit them in the new casing?
![]() Re: 750 engine swapSomeone else must answer that, or you can try searching the site. It may be enough to change the stator and pickups.
![]() Re: 750 engine swapI have just looked inside the old casing, the generator wires are the same but the ignition pickup coils wires are different, the old motor has two wires and the newer one has four. It would seem to me if I changed the pick up coils over that would do the trick but will they fit the newer motor? Please help
![]() Re: 750 engine swapYou don’t say what year the “new” 750 is, and it could be the pickups are the issue.
Check this thread, it may have the answer you need https://www.viragotechforum.com/viewtop ... =5&t=54789 _______________________________________________________________________

![]() Re: 750 engine swapI think the old motor is 91 and the new one is 93.
![]() Re: 750 engine swapCyes the pickups are the issue
![]() Re: 750 engine swapRight the newer engine has a single ignition pickup the older original motor has two with a three bolt fixing but the newer one has a spare bolt mount giving three mounts so can I swap the older one into the new motor this would solve my problem.... Can someone please help?
![]() Pick up ciolsHi. I have just changed my 750 fist Gen to a gen two motor. But have a problem as the early motor has a two pick up system on the flywheel with four wires and the newer motor 1993 has the single pick with two wires. So what can I do to hook up it up. Options...... 1fit the two pick ups to the later motor which I think will fit?. 2....Fit the later loom ....or is there a rewire I can do?.. Heeeeeeelp!!!!
![]() Re: Pick up ciolsAre you using the TCI from the newer engine?
![]() Re: Pick up ciolsthe "easy" reply would be, "just fit the Gen-I flywheel into the new Gen-II engine and use the original harness".
the problem there is that's not so easy to do because the F/W is a booger to get off [either/both], but all-that might be easier than acquiring a new harness ... either way, me thinks you will become very fluent in "wiring" soon. "Over the Mountains of the Moon,

Re: Pick up ciolsI have both but they look the same?
![]() Re: Pick up ciolsI can get the loom that went with the new motor
![]() Re: Pick up ciolslabel the flywheels so they don't get mixed-up, they have different [& individual] trigger points
myself [even though my least favorite things to do on the planet are anything electrical or plumbing] I would go with the "new" harness with the new engine [and TCI also if you have it] others might adapt the old harness ![]() if you think you might want to inspect the harness and make sure it's in good shape 'inside', here's an excellent TRV post about re-building your harness --->https://viragotechforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=140&t=29436 "Over the Mountains of the Moon,

Gen one to Gen two engine swapHi, I am desperate for some advice. I have a Gen one 750 which had a noisy starter so have bought a Gen two 750 motor with the later soloniod type starter. The problem is the wiring is different so I want to swap over the pick up coils, generator windings and flywheel from the older motor into the newer motor or is there a simple way to modified the wiring look. I do have the loom from the newer motor. What can I do can somebody please help me.....
![]() Re: Gen one to Gen two engine swapThere is an ongoing thread on this already, and a bunch of older ones. I cannot tell how easy or hard it is to move the flywheel etc. over to the newer engine, but I used the new harness (but unless you also have switchgear, ignition switch and instruments from the donor bike you have some mods to make). You also need the cylinder head engine mounts from your old engine and fit them to the the new one - without disturbing the cylinder head gasket, so be careful. The coils from the newer bike is a serious PITA to fit because they don't - you need to fabricate some mounts, and even then room is at a premium.

Three threads, different areas, same issue, same poster. All one thread now. _______________________________________________________________________
