Anyone transform Virago to an E-bike?

PostAuthor: Arjay » Tue Oct 15, 2019 12:58 pm

Just curious.

Anyone transform a Virago (or any motorcycle ) to a Electric bike?

I think the Virago because of its unique frame is a good candidate.
My understanding is no transmission needed. The electric motor can attach directly to driveshaft. But Im not 100% sure about that. Seems strange to not have some form of disconnect.

I read about engine braking becomes regeneration.

What would definitely be cool is if it had some solar platform charging while parked. If the commute was short enough it might get close to zero cost (excluding solar setup and diminishing life expectancy of cells).

I know they have e-bikes and kits but thinking something more affordable.

Why on God's green earth would anyone want to convert a perfectly good bike to electric?

While I'm all for technical advancements. If it weren't for future thinkers, we'd still be carve'n our steaks with a sharpened rock. But, there's gotta be a line somewhere between these forward thinkers and common sense. I don't care what the "news" tells people of the potential benefits of electric transportation. As a user of lithium batteries for couple decades, now..I can say, without a doubt..this technology is still in it's infancy. Cars, planes, cell phones..pretty much anything with these power sources have the tendency...sometime/somewhere...to explode. I used to explode/short out these batteries just for giggles, under controlled environment of coarse. Just to show the lethal potential. All it takes is one deep discharge to start the heat cycle. Lithiums do not like this. Also..these batteries do not/will not, ever, recover from a deep discharge. Once these batteries discharge beyond a certain point, cuz the charge system fails, it's toast. A lithium ion (Li-ion) battery packs more energy into a smaller space than a traditional battery, which means it packs a bigger punch if something goes wrong. A lead acid battery won’t normally burn because the electrolyte (the component that enables the flow of electrical charge between the cathode and anode) is water. In lithium ion, it’s an organic solvent. That’s the biggest concern. In something like a car, you have many of these cells stacked together. If one cell fails, there is a chance it can cause failure in neighboring cells. It just cascades.
I really can't see why anyone would want to side "ontop" of something that could go "boom".

Remember: This thought was even in the '80/90s. Wasn't just cuz harley was always break'n down, but also going electric, cuz of all this "going green" garbage.

Energica builds amazing electric bikes. Zeros are nice too. I've ridden both and they are fun!
