Midnight paint help

PostAuthor: Todd TCE » Tue Jun 14, 2016 11:54 am

Looking to repaint the tank on the 750. I'm seeing that these "black" bikes were not really so all black as one would think.

Both have a hint of reddish gold speck to them if you catch it in the sun the right way. I see this on my XJs also despite reading black is black.

Anyone have solid info on a source for these black finishes?

Nobody has any paint code info?

Getting ready to strip the 920 tank- it's got a lot of rust issues...then ready for some color!

Taking a painted part to a paint shop should help them make a batch of a matching colour. My 750 came with Midnight Special sidecovers, despite being the standard version, and there isn't a hint of red in the paint, it's just a dull black coating.

If you can't find the original code, you might be able to mimic the original by using pearl or flake in a clear coats. I've been using Duplicolor "Paint Shop" system of primer, base coat and clear coat. Then add whatever pearl or flake (from "Paint with pearl") you want to achieve the desired effect in the next clear coat, then more clear over that. Paint with Pearl sells the pearl and flake in small amounts.

Update on this, been a while.

The color we picked from has a bit too much red in it. It's black until you catch the sun just right then it shows a dark maroon. The red/gold flake is about right but the paint base color is too red.

I'll probably strip it again and see if we can better match it. It has proven to be the same color on the XS1100 here too. Looking at it and the speedo/tach cover on the Virago I think we can get it closer.
