Peculiar Virago 700 barn find break in

PostAuthor: pastot » Fri May 25, 2018 11:07 pm

New here but former 82 Maxim owner who just bought an 84 xv700 barn find. I'll learn more about its history once the vin and title paper work is complete. In short it has never been ridden! It was bought, and prepped for shipping but sat unclaimed in storage for 34 yrs. No kidding less than 2 miles on the odometer. So my delema is both restore and break-in tasks I should consider to bring this beautiful ole bike to life. First in needs a serious cleaning, I plan on using an airport to get the heap of dust of if before I gives it a bath and remove what appears to be protection tape on the chrome, I figure wd-40 should help remove the sticky stuff. Keys were not found so I need to search a bit more as to where there may be a spare key hidden, or call the locksmith. I hope the rear box holds some paperwork, key code, keys out a letter from Private Malone! It needs oil (it is tagged as drained, I hope the gas and carbs were also drained. I hope the carbs and cylinders were fogged., And that the engine and carb gaskets etc are good. All I need for a complete bike of the brake light lense oil and tires. The tires hold air but again they're just as old so new rubber before it hits the road. I will pull the plugs and bore scope the cylinders to impact for any corrosion. I was told I should expect Fork seals to need replacing.

I could use some ideas of what a 34 yr old brand new bike may need to bring her to life.

Wow, just........WOW !

If it’s a 700, it’s an ‘84 or ‘85.

You can take the helmet lock off and you’ll find the key code on the back of it, a Yamaha dealer should be able to help with keys.

Congrats! she's a beauty.

should you need new fork seals [IMO unlikely ATT] before loosening anything, use an impact wrench on the damper-rod-bolt, if they just spin you'll need a "special-tool" to hold it from inside.
see #19 & #40 ---> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... front-fork

OEM mirrors are still available (in case you want to keep it "stock") ---> https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/yam ... ebar-cable

There are tools made to save seals; worth trying? No need to strip anything.

Mirrors on order, fork seals seem just fine so far. New tires just arrived today.
