9 digit VIN Number question.

PostAuthor: Kipsley » Thu Feb 28, 2019 6:53 am

I'm trying to research my new bike (a 1988 Virago VX400) and I am stumped by the 9 digit VIN number.

2NT-027100 stamped into the neck of the frame, and....

2NT-027100 stamped into the engine.

But I can't seem to do a VIN search online as I am led to believe that VIN numbers after 82 or 83 are supposed to be 17 digits long. So I'm confused.

My bike has no other numbers or compliance plates on it. Non that I can find, at least.

My bike is registered in Australia, so no issues there. I just wanted to know such things as country of manufacture, original colour (I believe originally it used to be a deep metallic green but it's now a lovely deep red), and is it really an 88 model, etc.

I have also been told that there is a way of "combining" the engine number and VIN number to come up with a proper 17 digit VIN number, but have no clue about how to do that.

Any help would be awesome.

2NT-027100 Built in Japan for the Japanese market.

From what I have, it was offered in two colors Deep Scarlet (DPS) and Camilla Green (CMG)

Oddly enough, my data base also has it listed as available in the US, though that seems unlikely without 17 digit VIN

If you have any luck finding info I would be interested too, I have just purchased a 2NT model which has the 9 digit vin, mine is black thought. Wiki has a bit of info, http://bikeswiki.com/Yamaha_XV400_Virago

There is, or recently was, a website which decoded the short Yamaha vin. I had to use it for work to try and identify a stolen bike with no number plate, I will try and find the website through my history search.

I had a look, sadly my search history doesn't go back that far on my work phone, it was the beginning of December.
