Idle speed

PostAuthor: csmythe » Sun Jul 09, 2017 5:08 am

Is there any reason NOT to run at 1200 rpm on a xv250? Like the poor choice in sprocket size (I now run 17/42 and love it) did yamahooer choose a higher idle speed for all the wrong reasons? Just seems too high to me. Am I wrong?

welcome to the world of the XV250,
Trust the engineering as designed for application.

We want the loapy sounds for sure but imo anything below 1000 is silly. the induction and carburetion system works best at spec. It even promtes good ignition and combustion.

Lugging our engines is the most harmful operating coditions we can put them through.
The 250 loves RPM

I don't consider 1200 rpm as loapy. Every other bike I owned ran at 1200.
Once I tried my 750 shadow at 800. Sounded good but stalled all the time.
If I trust the engineers I'll have to go back to 16/45 sprockets whilst 17/42 works so damned good. Sigh, guess the Star aint fo me . . . I could dig out the tach and try it however. My ear can tune to 1200. It's getting back to 1400 rpm that is difficult. My tach is buried in a box at my bro's house and he works way up northern canada. sigh, oh well . . .
