Turbodog's Sidecar Project

PostAuthor: turbodog » Sun Mar 23, 2014 5:02 pm

Mad_Russian called me on it, so here goes:

Well, with the all-singing, all-dancing EFI/turbo/restomod project closing in on the finish line (yes, I've been saying that for over a year now....), I have 3 steetable bikes in the shed (restomod chain-drive, spare parts shaft-drive bike, and a BMW R11S I've been riding daily) - and nearly enough spare parts to build a 3rd XV. As I'm pondering selling the spare parts bike, my wife decides she'd like to be able to ride with me sometimes. She's taken the MSF basic course - twice. Each time, life has thrown us a curve ball and thwarted the plan to get her a bike.

Now she says that she's interested, but worried now age may be a factor, so suggests a trike. In searching Craigslist for a trike, we see a sidecar rig with a dog in it. Eureka! (Having recently sent our beloved retriever to doggie heaven, we are waiting to be chosen by another dog). So, a sidecar rig it is.

I see an ad for a Vetter Terraplane, and after a little research, decide it is a fine candidate. A few days later,

Heres a link to photo album:

It is in pretty good shape, but the brake hardware is all missing.
So, I strip it down and verify nothing worse than surface rust. I also find out that original brake parts are unobtanium, so I set about adapting a Virago XV920K wheel and brake.

Image

For the tug, I'm adapting my spare parts bike, using a XV-R tank, European TR1 tail, and NOS Vetter Quicksilver fairing:

Image

So, am now in the process of fabricating the mounts to mate up the car and tug:

And the fiberglass body is awaiting prep and paint.

More to come. Some plans include:
6 degree raked trees
front header relocated to left side of bike

'81 XV920R, Resto-mod, back on the operating table.

Don' know what you're talkin' about Rob, I have it on good authority that when one of the guys put his new trailer on the back of his Honda to take it home from the Echuca weekend, his cruising speed went down from 140Ks , to a sensible 139Ks or so! :bg:

Nice un' … There's some picture (and links to the respective owners) of several TR1-based sidecars on www.tr1.de in the gallery. Furthermore you can find a couple of picture on how they are mounted to the bikes. Maybe you can draw some inspiration from there.

Cheers,

Thanks for the reminder about sidecar rigs on TR1.de. Good stuff. This weekend I plan to put the final touches on my wheel hub/XV wheel adapter and brake caliper mount. Then on to the tug mounts.

Zook, I don't have nearly enough time. The turbo bike sits, ignored for now. I know she'll run, just needs EFI mapping tweaks. But, lots of body and paint work remains. If I'm going to kick my car out of the garage and convert it to a paint booth, it make sense to have both the turbo project and the sidecar project ready for paint when the weather's right. So, the general flow will be:

- get the bike-side mounts fabbed
- go for a ride on the Beemer
- get the tug running
- go for a ride on the Beemer
- verify basic geometry and handling with SC frame and tug
- go for a ride on the Beemer
- sand/sandblast/prep the sidecar and tug frames
- go for a ride on the Beemer
- prep the sidecar, turboXV and tug bodywork
- go for a... well, you get the picture.
Tuning the turboXV will get done in there somewhere....

Hey TD
Nice score and project . . . if you haven't hreard about it here are some links to

And winter riding
[BBvideo 425,350]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v05Ed3DoUxw[/BBvideo]

But I have one question . . .
what did you do to the wheel and or bearing to run it out of forks,
with only support on the inside.

I wish to build a trailer using the 1st gen wheels and have been wondering for a year now.
Thanks.

Yes, I'm an investor in 'Sit, Stay, Ride'. Glad to see it made it's funding goal.

As for the wheel adaptation, it was a chore.

I made a wheel hub using 2-3/8 OD, 3/16 wall DOM steel tube, 1/4 steel plate, and 2" OD 11-ga steel pipe:
sidecar wheel hub.bmp

I modified the wheel by machining off both sides flush to the original brake disc-mounting surfaces, and drilling the center hole thru with a 2-3/8 hole saw. I was fortunate to have access to a bridgeport or the center hole would not have been possible. I also opened up the 8mm bake disc mounting holes to 8mm clearance:

6 degree raked tree modification.... done.
Lower sidecar mounting subframe.... done.
Relocate front cyl header to left side of bike... done.
Waiting for rear subframe to arrive, mine was too rusty to trust- or to weld to.

Pics soon.

Well, progress slowed for the past few weeks, due to bad reasons (long work hours) and good:

We adopted him from the shelter last weekend, and he is settling in nicely.

Well, I generally forget to take pics, or take them with my cell phone and they turn out crappy. Here's a few:
Subframe. Bolts to the front engine lug thingy, the 3 right side footpeg bracket bolts, the subframe-to-footpeg bracket attach point, and diagonally across to the left side centerstand mounting hole, and the front cyl-to-frame mounting point;
Image

mounted on the bike, front view. You can also see the front header re-route:
Image.

Rear view:
Image

Next, a view of the sidecar frame mated to the bike (attached below.. not showing up for me):
HD0f0f8CrRCM_Edqsmcg6LBsgeSm3mjT-9rcmR9TAQRdsesZ49-WnIhhe0jpl0TxywvFQDRFH5ILocTcLY7cu1i7Yxs6w/20140707_204412.jpg?psid=1" alt="Image" class="resize_me" />

A closer view. The shaft just 'above' the footpeg will have a 2nd pedal for the sidecar brake, right next to the existing pedal (bike rear brake). It is not yet attached on the sidecar side in this pic. It has a pin which inserts into a hole I drilled in the bike rear brake pedal axle that will support the bike side of the shaft in alignment with the existing pedal while allowing for adjustment in the sidecar toe and lean (attached below.. not showing up for me):

POwZvJdJz_O8kSMQWf3Phfs3HFOkFXqAbMAN8vInD0rEQi1icYllG_rKtAoqO2hsjzSYPYx48Q3bu8YazDtoOctphb_sUIMA3xZdruEblJM/20140707_204434.jpg?psid=1" alt="Image" class="resize_me" />

OK, and for the upper mount I added a diagonal brace to the left side subframe-to-mainframe mounting point:
Image

With the fab work done, I've now stripped and primed the frame, and am in the paint process. Am also working on fiberglass mods to the body to incorporate turn signals and a driving lamp.
