1ST GEN YAMAHA VIRAGO OIL FILTER COVER ADAPTER

PostAuthor: tukes23 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 12:36 pm

Mod edit: Approved item

If you own a Virago, at some point you have probably wondered if it was possible to put an oil cooler or a remote oil filter on your bike. Before now, drilling holes in your factory oil filter cover was the only way to accomplish this. Until now...

This oil filter cover adapter is CNC machined from 6061 aluminum and is a direct replacement for your factory cover. However, unlike the factory cover, this one has passages and ports to reroute the hot engine oil through an oil cooler or a remote filter.

Features -

- Fits 81-83 XV750 and XV920
- Fits just like(or better) than the factory cover
- Outlet and inlet ports are tapped to 1/4" NPT thread to accept an array of fittings
- Comes with a machined finish but can be easily brushed, polished, anodized, powder coated, or painted

Please visit the online store for purchase.

You ought to make plain ones too without the oil cooler bits. Good condition second hand Gen 1 oil filter covers are very hard to find, I need one and can't find one anywhere that is not damaged. I live in the UK and don't need or want an oil cooler.
I have a perfect Gen2 one but the oil holes don't match up.

FWIW: more Gen-II riders vs Gen-I by nearly 2:1 [495 vs 291] ---> viewtopic.php?f=78&t=35132&p=472777#p472777

According to Greg (nanno) you can redrill the Gen II cover to suit the Gen I.

you could do a little loop, and straight back into the engine... may not be pretty but it would be functional. or depending on the answer to the question below, just plug the holes...

After looking at my filter cover, I have a question about how this cover works... I noticed that the oil starts on the outside of the filter and goes in. loops through the cover and exits via a passage in the side of the cover. Does this adapter force all of the oil through the cooler by not having the normal passage way. Or does it keep the passage way and let the oil cooler run it's own thermal siphon?

Yes, this cover severs the the standard path for the oil and diverts all of it through the cooler. This change also allows you to run a remote oil filter system by just not putting in the internal filter and plumbing it to an external filter block. Also, to answer your question, yes, you could just put a loop and run it straight back to the engine if you did not want to install a cooler. I have plans to produce oil cooler adapters for the second gen motors and factory replacement covers for both styles, but my other side job is taking up a lot of my time right now. I hope to get back to making parts after the new year.
