Cheap hard bags from ebay

PostAuthor: Bloodshot » Sun Apr 09, 2017 8:46 pm

So I've got a long road trip planned for this summer and I've decided that hard bags are the way to go. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with the cheap units found on ebay.

Here are the links to what I'm looking at:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/311200278934?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/311078452687?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT

Anyone have any idea if they will or will not fit my 94 XV1100? Are they crap? Will they fall apart the first day? Let's hear your opinions.

Thanks.

Don't know about the hard bags, I guess they'd be nice because you can lock stuff up in them. I've done a few long trips over the years (several days) using a good-sized sissy bar bag with a roll-bag topper and two fair sized throw-over saddle bags. Did a leisurely tour around Lake Superior last summer and camped out in the evenings over 6 days. All my camping gear including tent is designed for back-packing so is very compact and fits in the sissy bar bag with the exception of the tent that I strap on behind the sissy bar. The roll top is for rain gear, spare gloves, bandanas etc. Saddle bags for clothes, etc. Of course this only works if you're riding solo, and the sissy bar bag mounted seat-side makes a good backrest as well. Leather Up.ca has a good selection of sissy bar bags, roll tops and saddle bags.
My Ride, '97 XV1100, +14, 10" over forks, progressive rear, Jardine forward controls, cobra slip-ons, K&N Filter, Dyno Jet Stage 1, Kuryakin grips, heat demon heaters, custom fabricated seat, chrome side covers, bullet signals, risers, custom modified rear fender with modified FZ1 tail light, sectioned and reversed front fender, custom paint...

I did a 3 week trip last summer with the sissy bar bag and two small-medium saddle bags. The tent, sleeping bag and pad were stowed on the pillion seat with the bag on the rear of the sissy bar. It got the job done, but things were stuffed in tight and some things got a bit wet in the rain. I'm thinking of hard bags because I'd like more room, and the fact that I will be in more populated areas (SoCal and some cities) for a while makes me want locking luggage.

I bought a similar set. You will need to fabricate a frame to attach to the bike and the bags. They work OK. Pretty flimsy on the hinges. But if you are carful they are fine.
