reflecting on the past year. --- to help cheer myself, I got to thinking about my first bike and all the fun with it ... just got to wondering what others started on? mine was a 1959 or '60 "Allstate" 125 2-stroke, powered by a Puch engine. exactly like pic except it also had a 'buddy' seat attached to rear fender (iirc). had a rather complicated/delicate handle-bar shifter for its 3-speed tranny.

When I turned 15-1/2, I got a Yamaha YM1 for $300. I thought the tank was ugly but it never let me down.

A.J.S. 500 cc. single. Not sure of the year, I'm guessing mid-late '50's; I acquired it in 1966.

My first bike was a 1973 Yamaha TX500. I bought it in 1982 or 1983. It was stolen and I did a happy dance! I replaced it with a 1982 Yamaha Vision 550. It was night and day.

I went from the Allstate to a Honda CA150 (~ 1961-2?) the 'most fun' I ever had was when my room-mates' Dad had bought his 2 younger brothers 1971 Yamaha JT-1 mini-bikes. we picked them up at the dealer to deliver them. of course we had to "test" ride them along the way, to be certain they were "running ok"... the term - "ride-it-like-you-stole-it" comes to mind. brand new out-of-the-box, we flogged the daylights out of them, and they never even hickuped, just ripped right along.

Yamaha 250 "Big Bear" 2 stroke twin. Black frame with a purple frame. My brother picked up two and put them together and I bought what came out. Rode it for a year or so then got a Yamaha TX750 twin

I really liked the TX, with the pseudo British look and great power compared to the 250. The Yamaha dealer wouldn't touch it to work on it. T-boned a Falcon station wagon in November 74 , 6 months in a cast and got it back together then bought a new R90/6 BMW.

So you managed to destroy it before it self-destructed, then Pity about your injuries I love the looks of the TX750, and the engine was a great idea poorly executed. It got much improved for 1974, with more oil volume and I believe a tensioner for the balancer chain, but it was still to little too late. The siamesed outlet still made the engine overheat if ridden briskly for some time, despite more oil, and the balancer shaft chain still stretched beyond the scope of the tensioner after many miles. Yamaha killed the model after just two years. The KZ750 twin from 1976 was fairly similar, very robust, but also not nearly as pretty as the TX.
